Battery Issue

In case anyone experiences this, I had a warning come up regarding a "battery charging failure." The X7 has approximately 1200 miles. A message appeared in the iDrive system and attempted to auto-schedule a service appointment. I took it to the dealership and needed a new battery.

As an FYI, BMW has a backlog for replacement batteries so really great dealership team took one out of another X7 while they wait for batteries to ship from BMW.

Apparently, this was the Lithium Ion battery, not the main starting battery--the AGM battery.

I didn't know X7 had a lithium ion battery. What does it use the Lithium battery for and where is it stored?

I thought X7 just had the Lead Acid AGM 12V battery?

It depends on the options in the vehicle as to what and how many batteries you have. I believe, but don't quote me, the Lithium Ion Battery is stored in the trunk under the cover where the spare tire well is located.

The lithium ion battery is used to power all the auxiliary equipment like Navigation, iDrive and other auxiliary equipment.

It's under the hood, passenger side under a small cover. Like you said, probably just for that stuff which is why there aren't any great proclamations about it.

Interesting information. Thanks.

10Ah is a pretty small battery.

Car actually has 3 batteries according to my dealership. One of which has a recall.

... clearly I got it repaired already.

Don't know where the batteries are located.

Interesting... According to the diagrams and info I could find there are only two: One in the trunk area and the smaller one in the engine compartment on the passenger side by the firewall. I did find info about a larger 60 Ah battery in the engine compartment. But it was linked to a unique option package and seemed to replace the smaller 10 Ah one.

Which option package includes the 60ah battery?

S2VS: Executive Drive Pro (or just 2VS). Based on the video, it sounds like Active Comfort Drive w/Road Preview which only comes as part of the Dynamic Handling Package option on the X7. If you have the DHP option, you can use a VIN decoder to verify (I don't have the DHP option).
