I've been monitoring my gas mileage more closely after the prices went over $3/gallon. I have 7,200 miles on my car and average 23-24 mpg when I carefully monitor my rpm's and drive conservatively. I've tried a few full tanks where I drive how it feels comfortable and while not very aggressively, it is spirited driving. I get about 18mpg. And that's with a half and half commute to work (highway and city evenly). To get the numbers the EPA sets (or whomever), you really need to drive with constant attention to the tach needle. You need to put the car in neutral 1/4 mile before a freeway exit. You can't go anywhere near the 4k rpm valvetronic mark. You need to drive like an old lady to get this type of gas mileage. Is it possible? Yes. Is it fun? NO!

gas mileage
I am getting about 22-23 mpg in town and plus 30 on the road (driving anywhere from 70 to 80 mph, prob. ave. 75 mph). That said, I am getting a consistent one mpg less than the computer shows when I physically check by dividing miles driven by actual gallons of gas. I alway let the automatic gas nozzel shut off and then add exactly .4 gal. past that, which fills it up. This is the easiest car I have ever had to fill up. My in-town driving is not aggressive and I usually get a few miles driven on the freeway, so my miles driven are not exclusively "in town" all the time, but I guess no one just drives around the block, red lights, stop signs, etc. 100% of in-town driving.

Took a 1,800 km trip and averaged 7.4lt/100 km highway & city - mostly highway.
Converts to 33.5 miles/gallon, US. Averaged 102km/hr (63 MPH) Extremely pleased.

Got 24.5 over 700 miles on 330i 6Spd ED
While in Germany on ED I was getting 24.5 avg MPG in my 330i with 6spd
And while I was being somewhat conservative in my throttle mgmt. I still did plenty of Munich City driving and achieved speeds of 115mph on the Autobahn. Manual gearbox must have a big advantage? |

I've got a 325 step. I get about 29-30 with almost all highway miles. I've driven to work and had an average speed of over 70mph and average consumption of about 33. I'm very pleased with the performance I'm having at 4K miles.

Ok, for the contrarian view:
Let's look at it this way - if you have to buy an extra 2-4 gallons of gas each week because your mileage is suffering, then that would translate into an additional 104-208 gallons per year. Assume $2.50/gal (or whatever figure you want), and you are talking less than $600/year for a fast and smooth ride. When you consider these cars go from the mid-$30's to the mid-$40's, a new shirt from Nordstrom costs $125, a ticket to Disneyland costs $50, movie theater popcorn is $5 (small), what's an extra few hundred dollars on a $40k+ car? So long as your car is running ok and the software isn't malfunctioning, just give it a chance to break-in and see if mileage doesn't improve. If it stays 14-15, then get it checked out but only because of possible fuel delivery or burn problems. Otherwise, have a good time, ignore that gimmicky fuel mileage guage, and have fun!

10.4 Litres/100kms. Not too aggresive all the time on the throttle but I don't have to be with the instant response from my 2.5 litre engine with 98 RON fuel.
Could it be that your less than expected fuel economy has a part to play with the lower RON rated fuel quality available in the U.S. compared with what the engines are optimised for amongst other things?

325 step here. I took 2 long road trips about 700miles roundtrip and got an unbelievable 34.7 mpg on both trip. next time i'll take a pic because no one believes me. To make it better there are quite a few small towns to slow down thru on the trip so it wasnt a set cruise and go.
City mpg was averaging 23.7 with normal auto mode and then i found the sport mode and the mpg dropped to about 22.7. I'll still take that!!!!

My first 500 miles or so I was getting 20-23mpg. I was a bit worried. I'm now close to 2000 miles and the last reading was 24.7mpg w/ an avg. speed of 28mph. IMO is great considering on that tank, I did 95% city driving. I've been driving pretty conservatively with gas prices being so high. I just filled up last night, a whopping $44.00 yikes!
I went on a 200 mile trip a couple of weeks ago and got 28.8mpg cruising between 70-80mph.

I have had mine since 7/10 and just hit 2K miles. Driving it really hard in the city it never went below 18mpg on a tank when the car was brand new. Driving it normal in the city is about 22mpg and driving conservativly in the city is about 25.5mpg. I move in 2 weeks and my milage will be 80% highway and I look forward to 30+ no problem.

I get 18.5 in Altanta
I get 18.5 in gridlocked Atlatna. That is not bad due to it take me 1 hour hand 15 minutes each day to get to and from work. What is sad is it is only 11 miles and they are still building thousands of houses in that short commute. The EPA need to have add a
to the city and highway ratings. They need to add "crid lock" rating. This would be how much gas a car burns at idle for an houre. If I had a car that got 50 miles in the city I would only get 25 doe to I just idle to work and back. |

i'm averaging 21mpg in los angeles with a 3 hour commute total per day covering about 40 miles. my revs are mostly under 3K (since traffic is slow all the way home)..i occasionally step on it more when i have the chance. i'm not amazed by the mileage but neither am i disappointed. it is rated at 21 city after all and los angeles is a pretty congested city!

Please keep in mind that once you stop your car, the mileage will increase like the recent gas price. If the area that you happen to commute in is rather flooded with traffic and stop signs, then probably, you'll get an awful mileage.
I'm able to achieve 24mpg even on a local street w/o much traffic lights. but once i got stuck at a left turn intersection for 6 minutes pratically not moving, it drops to 16mpg or something. I think it really depends on your area.

Does it matter?
How many here who have bought used or CPO really ask how the car was broken in?
What are the real statistics on how cars perform used on the lot with 50,000 miles on them that had no break-in versus break-in? I have test driven many used BMW's on dealer lots and I cant tell the difference whether they were broke-in or not. Just a thot and MO. |

The best I have been able to do with nearly 100% highway driving (trying to be tame but driving 80mph pretty regularly) is about 27mpg average for the tank. I have a 330i.

325i w/Step. For one 50 mile stretch on a recent long trip I got about 42 MPG right after a fillup. But most of that distance I was decending from a mountainous area. I'm getting a solid 31 and I do mostly highway.
