Honestly hard to say. Especially because I don’t even know if it’s working. Need to return it. Hopefully the bozos in customer service actually help.

I’m going to install mine this morning. 50hp increase should feel slightly noticeable but I’m guessing it is not going to be night and day on such a big vehicle. The M50i is already more aggressively tuned from the factory which is why you will only pick up around 50hp versus some of them putting out double that.

Annoying. My coolant level is low again — I knew the dealer didn’t bother fixing it, they just topped it off. Despite me explaining the issue in detail when I dropped it off (I had refilled coolant multiple times by then). So now I have to undo plugging in this wire harness — it’s a huge pain in the neck — and bring it back to the dealer to resolve this coolant issue. I’m half tempted just to leave the harness in and hope they don’t say anything or don’t care, but just feels like a risk.

I would not take that risk if I were you. BMW is much more sensitive to engine tuning modifications nowadays, either DME tuning or "piggy backs" like this. Even though the X7 is not considered a popular vehicle to tune, compared to a 3-series. While there are no guarantees, don't make it easy for BMW to flag your vehicle and void your warranty on a $100k vehicle. Just my $.02...

If you are not close with your service advisor and/or know if he is mod friendly, I would take it out to be on the safe side as jmciver said. If you are not close and with them and your dealer is not mod friendly then they will most certainly flag it in the system and you could have issues down the road. I did notice when I looked this morning the connectors on the X7 for factory harness are a little more tucked under than they were on my M5 and it will take a little more time to take on and off but once you do it a few times it should be quicker. Sorry about the coolant issue but it definitely sounds like you have something going on there. If I were you, I would consider calling BMW NA and make them aware of the situation before you go back and have your dealer try and fix it again. May help down the road if anything else comes up. I have usually had good experiences with other BMWs when I get BMW NA involved and they are actively involved with the dealer fixing. I have had them buy back/offer trade assist dollars to swap out vehicles on a few vehicles from me as well as a result of having an issue that couldn’t be fixed or figured out after 3-4 attempts

Different vehicles, but I believe both of ours are same age. I’d get the coolant error when parking on an incline in my 7. Think it could be related to that?

Good call. I pulled it out and brought it in. Service said they think it may just be air bubbles, and they’re convinced there are no coolant leaks. They flushed the system and carefully refilled. We’ll see...

So here is a question for those of you considering this upgrade.... Would anyone consider this upgrade on the X7 to help improve towing performance? Admittedly, tuning the X7 (or any SUV I own) just for more HP/speed is not appealing to me. But adding extra HP/TQ for better towing seems like potentially a good reason, especially for the 40i. Increasing HP/TQ does not increase the towing capacity, but could make for a better, more confident towing experience.

Thoughts....?

I just finished adding it a little bit ago. Much easier to install if you remove the intake scoops that Ben from RG Sport indicated as the harness locations are pretty low and almost impossible to get to otherwise. After removing the support braces and part of the air intake scoop it is a pretty simple installation.

In regards to improved towing performance it will definitely help some, especially in the higher rpms between 3-6k rpms as most of the increased performance is in midrange acceleration. I definitely noticed increased towing performance in the previous X6M I had but it also had 570hp stock so it towed pretty well in stock form too. After Racechip it had around 680+hp so not really an apples to apples comparison but I did notice a difference.

Thanks, that is what I figured. So what made you chose RaceChip over some of the other piggy back options available that have also been around for a while?

I already had Racechip on my F90 M5 so I had them reprogram it to the X7 for free since I already had it. I’ll see what Steve Dinan (now Carbahn) comes out with and/or Dinan come out with and if either is a more aggressive tune the. Racechip I may go with them only because of warranty. It was plenty extra in my M5 and seemed pretty good today when I did a few pulls but I haven’t had a chance to let it fully adapt to what it will really be like in the X7. I’m sure it will be good enough for me

Bumping this as I've just purchased the RS chip from Ben. With this type of investment I think it's important to have somebody on he other end who is sincerely vested in your satisfaction. Without getting into details I can say I'm extremely satisfied...and I haven't even received the chip yet.

I'm in the same boat wrt the warrently issues. I just purchased a 3 month old 2020 M50i with 2500 miles - full remainder of the factory warranty remaining. I just drove 300 miles from NJ up to VT for a ski trip and the stock MPG is, frankly, terrifying. I did the math and the RS chip will basically pay for itself in less than a year.

Shout out to Ben - very knowledgeable and engaged/responsive. I feel like I'm in good hands working with him directly as opposed to ordering from RC directly.

I did 17.4 MPG on my way here, I'll post back when I have something comparable after I do the chip install.

The install is actually kind of a pain in the ass, because I had to uninstall the wire harness to take my car in to have a coolant leak fixed. You need to have small hands to get down it o the engine bay into tight spaces and swap the connections. I’ve had my brother in law do it each time, my hands are just too big, and I’ve felt bad about making him come and do it once again in the freezing cold.

So, I’m still waiting for a somewhat more mild day to reinstall the harness and then hopefully this one will actually work.

I’ll report back soon as I can get it done.
