Poor design? & warning

I've used the large cargo cover a few times and as you know, there are two covers that need to be removed/reinstalled on the left and right side.

Last week when the large cover wasn't installed, I noticed one of the side covers wasn't "snapped" down all the way. I lightly pressed down on it and was met with some resistance. When I removed the cover the small tab was bent and broke off when I tried to straighten it.

I'm not sure if a rear seat passenger (either one of my 8 year olds or grandma) was exploring and opened the cover and tried to close it....unsuccessfully, but it bent.

I took it in Monday to get a new display key programmed (original key kept rebooting) and showed them the broken cover.

The service advisor ordered new covers for both sides as I'm sure it will be a matter of time till another cover gets broken.

Another option is to not use the covers at all. The windows are tinted so darkly back there no one can see what’s in there anyway.

Between my minivan’s and my X5’s I’ve spent the better part of 15 years without using those annoying and bulky covers. I remove them and store them in the garage the moment I get home from taking delivery at the dealership. Life is much easier that way.

Completely agree. As soon as I got our X7 home I put both covers in the house for safekeeping.

It’s US law that those covers must be provided so that’s why BMW still supplies them. Big waste of time. Every time a lease ends I run around my garage trying to remember where I stored them.

LOL, I do the exact same thing. I keep them in a closet in my office so they don't get damaged. At least they look pristine when I trade the car.

Can you store the cover under the trunk mat like in the X5? That's where I would put mine 100% of the time.

I have one in the garage that I'm not using and the other in the car. Problem with storing in the rear is it takes up storage space.

I think curious passengers removing and replacing the cover factored into the breakage.

Mine are both up in a garage cabinet on top of the box with my carpet mats as well. 35 months from now they will all go back in... but not a day sooner

But on the X5 they have a dedicated spot just for the cover so you can stow it without taking up any additional storage space. I just assumed the X7 would have something similar.

edit: Not sure why my picture didn't upload

The X7 has that too but it takes up space, so into the garage it goes. I wish owners had the option to get the car without them.

The rear floor hatch is 12-18" and doesn't open up like the X5. When the large cover is stowed, it requires removing the side panels. If you want to use the space to store stuff and the cover is also stored, you have an opening of several inches to maneuver between the cover and opened hatch. If the stored item doesn't bend, forget it.

Thanks... I see the difference now.

Resurrecting this old thread. Exactly as the OP Tattooed shows in the first post, the little retention tab has bent and half broken off this cap piece on the right hand side of my X7. It now sits in place in its designated spot, but doesn't fully snap in.

I typed that number that you see in the picture (9918022940RH) into GetBMWParts.com and BMWPartsPros.com, (with and without the RH) thinking it's a part number, but it's not recognized as such. Anyone have a part number for it? If need be, I'll just ask the dealer at the next service, but figured I could take care of it myself.

I don't anticipate popping these in and out a lot for use of the cargo cover, but they popped out during my road trip with the summer wheels in the trunk.

Thanks as always, dude! I might just leave it in place until either the next service, or the next order I place from GetBMWParts.
