Running in period

Hi all,

I pick up my X7 M50d on Sunday. What’s the situation regarding running in period? Do I need to keep it below 3000 rpm for a set period of time/miles and stay away from launch control?

Does this still apply to new cars these days?

There should be a section in your Owner Manual on this. Since yours is a diesel it may not be the same as for gasoline engine. IIRC, not to exceed 100 mph in the first 1000 miles. I wouldn't do launch control during the break in period.

I found something (forget where at the moment) that said for the first 1200 miles keep it below 100 mph and less than 4500 RPM. It took some restraint, but I was able to accommodate that requirement

That sounds difficult. I found a user manual online and for my diesel the recommendations are:

- for the first 1200 miles don't exceed 3500 rpm or 90mph. Avoid kick down or driving under "full load"
- Tyres do not provide maximum grip until 180 miles
- Brakes - pads and discs do not perform optimally until 300 Miles

Obviously Launch Control can't happen until all of the above conditions are met. Not sure I can do it...

I drive 100 miles each day to and from work so in a week I should be able to drive the ##$$#^$ out of it..

Yes, this is correct per the owners manual

Congratulations with your new M50d.

Do you mind sharing the cost of M50d and others available X7 such as 50i & 30i in Thailand. I believe they cost much higher than the ones in USA.

Thank you.

Sure. BMW Thailand only bring in one version of the X7 - the M50d. No current plans to bring in any other engine variants. Apparently this is to differentiate if from the X5 which currently is the 30d MSport version only, but I believe they will launch the hybrid version later this year.

The M50D including 5 years maintenance comes in at 8,999,000 Thai Baht. I try not to think about how this translates into real money, but in USD its around 280K. Its 30K US cheaper than the Range Rover Hybrid LWB that I originally planned to purchase - but at the end of the day I couldn't face a plug in hybrid with a 2.0L engine. Who wants a Range Rover that sounds like a hot hatch?

I haven't driven the M50d yet, so I'm really keeping my fingers crossed I've made the right choice...

I really wanted the 850i but a) it comes in at US408K and b) the rear seats are a COMPLETE waste of time. I cant even get my 9 & 10 yr olds in the back...

Very nice, I like the color combination

You won't be disappointed with the ride on this M50d, I believe it came with Dynamic Handling Package. I really like Integral Active Steering, it makes X7 to maneuver like a car especially when you change lane.
