X-pipes flow better than H-pipes is the predominant reason. H-pipes also tend to be more susceptible to introducing larger drone ranges you have to then try to combat. I can't speak for other manufacturers but our exhaust development process has been pretty rigid in a specific formula for a long time in that the axleback portion of the system is utilized as the primary adjuster of tone (deeper). Yes there is a volume increase as well but its a secondary goal to the tone and ensuring a lack of drone. The midpipe/x-pipe/resonator delete on the other hand is primarily a volume enhancer. Deeper/bassier tones that a H-pipe would generate don't elicit the same percieved volume increase that an X does as well.
