I can't see them going fwd in the next 3.

That's the only thing that would get me into X drive.

Yeah I believe the underlying platform for the next 3 series will be the 35up, which is used in the current 7, the next 5 and 3, and is rear wheel drive.

The 1 series sedan is front wheel drive, but there is still a chance the next hatchback will be rear wheel driven

No mate the 3 stays RWD.

But the 1 goes FWD. So the M140i will be like gold dust. And pissed off 1 series customers may look for a used 3 instead.

In one of the of the magazines, about 3 months ago, Autocar I think, stated that although the plans two years ago was to make all one series fwd, this had now changed and long term there would be a residual rwd one series alongside the FWD version. Perhaps those with mainly straight roads like USA and Aus only to get the FWD version! Time will only tell!

Does appear many BMW plug in hybrids (including nest 3 series hybrids) could be all x drive with petrol driving front and electric motors driving rear

I think BMW did a great job with Xdrive. It's feels predominately RWD and you don't really know it's AWD until things get slippery.

I think, because BMW now use electric power steering the driven front wheels are less noticeable than if they had stuck with the more feelsome hydraulic set-up.
