X7 gremlins and reliability

Been observing here that the issues pegging the X5 don’t seem to be appearing here even though they share same electricals and underpinnings.

Thoughts?

Garage List
2017 BMW M3  [10.00]
2020 BMW X7  [0.00]
2019 BMW X3  [0.00]
2009 BMW 128i  [0.00]
If I had to speculate, it may be a numbers game contributing to that - the number of X7 owners is a noticeably smaller sample size than the new X5. Not to mention the fact that the owners who post on the forums is an even smaller sample size of all X7 owners....

Not saying the X7 is unreliable though. It is in its first year of a new model so glitches are to be expected. Despite the fewer X7 owners on the road, the fact that the number of first year glitches initially appears to be relatively low is a good sign at least..

Might we ask that you X5 owners share with us X7 owners what these gremlins are?

As we drive the X7, most of us (raises hand) don’t know what you are experiencing.

That is an atrocious list.

I’ve had the x5 since Nov and other than some iDrive issues (phone connectivity, connected app) and the Apple Pay thing, it’s been great. Same with X7

I've had a few issues with the Hey BMW not working - and tonight, no volume from any audio source or telephone - when you try and adjust volume, the screen would say no audio source active or something like that, even though a source was playing. Didn't matter the source, and shut the car down a few times for several minutes and no difference

A BMW Geniius said to press the volume button on the dash in for about 30 seconds to reset the system, which I did, and it came back. But he suggested I come in for a reprogramming as he's seen this before with an X7, and the volume press is a temporary fix once it occurs he said..

So going in one week after picking it up. What I'm a bit pissed about is if there is an "update" to fix this why wasn't the car programmed with updates before picking it up, (which was supposed to occur as part of the prep).

It could also be that the slightly later introduction of the X7 plays a role as well.

Some issues on the X5 might have already been fixed when the X7 came out.

Lexus LX would be the most reliable truck on the market but technology wise it is a decade behind the X7. I have been going back and forth on getting the X7 vs the LX. Will mostly buy vs lease.

I feel bad for all those X5 issues and with quite a few of them not being solved by BMW.

The LX takes over 7 seconds to go 0-60. That’s almost 1.5 seconds slower than even the 40i.

I would love a next gen LX or land cruiser. Guessing we won’t see one for another couple years.

Maybe a decade, that’s how Toyota keep their reliability, don’t rock the boat

no issues yet w/my x7 40i.. had plenty of issues with my outgoing 2019 X5 40i to the point where BMW bought it back.. even though they were able to fix all of the issues, i didn't quite feel comfortable driving it for longer periods. The x5 stalled a few times and left me stranded on the highway more than once. Engine issues at first so they swapped out a part or two.. then it was a bunch of electronic issues that kept putting the engine into safe mode.

It was time to give it back. I almost went elsewhere (Porsche, Audi, etc) but none of the BMWs I've had in the past gave me these headaches so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. BMW is about brand loyalty and they didn't want me going to a competitor so they gave me a great deal on the X7 and I couldn't be happier.

fingers crossed, so far no issues at all but I don't have enough miles to rate it.. Truck runs great, and the 40i power is more than enough for this vehicle. Lots of fun to drive. I'm enjoying it.

Got my first issue. X7 30D with 1.200 Miles. Steeringcolom did not telescoop after starting when leaving for diner at restaurant. Up and down tilt worked fine. Shut down the car and lock it for a few minutes then restart didn't fix it. Leaving the car for 2 hours while eating in the restaurant, still same problem. Drove back home and the next morning it all worked correct.

Good luck. I have the same error and others have reported it as well. I took it in to the dealer. There response is that it will require an entire new seat base but there are none available. They told me it could be months... I'm going to file a claim with BMW North America this week.

The service head at a big dealer in DFW mentioned they are seeing quite a few "software issues" on the X7 . Don't know what that means.

I have seen two instances of “no audio devices” when attempting to control the volume - no volume no control of any source including telephone - a hard reset of the infotainment fixes it - (30-40 second press of the volume button on the center console)

The CarPlay loss of connectivity issues I’ve experienced seems to be an iPhone issue - the problem is when you are connected to an existing Wi-Fi when entering the car - it gets confused it seems - a power cycle of the phone fixed it, or, if you enter the car with no existing Wi-Fi connection, it also picks up and works with the car Wi-Fi with no problem. It seems the handoff from a “real” Wi-Fi point to the direct bmw one is where the issue occurs

This only happens at home as that’s the only please where I enter the car already on a Wi-Fi point - all other cases out and about I’m just on cellular. I view this as an iOS issue

I am very disappointed with my first BMW. The mechanical part of the X7 is working flawlessly. However, the electronic section really sucks. X7 onboard GPS showing me miles apart from my actual location while Carplay (iOS13 B3, Google Map. Apple Map, and Waze) was spot on. The connnectedDrive works less than 1% of the time.

Anybody seen the “camera malfunction” and/or “Parking Assistance malfunction”, when shifting into reverse or parking? It’s happened in ours a couple times now, having owned it for about a month. Both times, after parking, locking, and leaving it for awhile, it has been fine, but there never seems to be a good time for this to happen. The cameras are indispensable on this behemoth.
