Anyone else considered this before going with the X7?

Cargo capacity greater but not much else from what you described above. GLS63 would be my choice over M50i but that is just personal preference.

The local MB dealer just got two GLS 580's in stock, one of which is nicely optioned. I owned 2 GL 550's and a GLS 550 before buying the X7 50i so I have real world experience in both SUV's. The new 2020 GLS is a solid SUV that faithful MB buyers will love. The new redesign has some nice features and while the looks of a vehicle is very subjective I find the new GLS a little bland compared to the X7. I've posted GLS negatives before but here are a few:
1. No wireless CarPlay support (yet) 2. The touchpad controller isn't very user-freindly 3. The dual 12.3" screens look tacked on (the new 2021 Escalade looks better) 4. The overall look of the leather seats looks mid-grade and there is no designo option 5. Overall it looks a little bland (generic) compared to almost every other SUV out there Just my personal take and as I said, others may disagree and love the new GLS. It's your money, spend it on the SUV you like! |

When I was shopping last November (between the GLS and X7), I couldn't believe how ambivalent I was between the '19 and the '20. Had they given me a better deal on a leftover '19, I probably would have pulled the trigger on the GLS. Imho every new generation of MB cars/SUVs feel slightly less "solid" than before, and that the '19 GLS actually had more presence than the '20 (not including the AMG versions of course). Then I looked at the X7 and I couldn't pass up an offer they made me on a '19 50i. So in the end I'm glad I checked out the X7.

I looked at the GLS for months, ordered a 580, and was in the middle of many months of wait before switching to an X7 and canceling the GLS. I have done a huge amount of research on the GLS side. But here's the most detail I've written down on why I switched to the X7:

In all seriousness there are only two cars in this segment worth considering... GLS & X7. The rest are an amalgam of suv/crossover or whatever.

I agree as several other so-called competitors in the segment are body-on-truck designs which make them bigger, heavier, and less desirable IMO. But if you need heavy-duty hauling capacity, a truck based SUV may be a better fit. But for everyday use as a people hauler, a unibody design is the way to go if you prefer easier access, a better ride, and often better fuel economy.

I've sat in the new GLS (even had a GLE 450 as a loaner which has the same interior) and I'm not a fan of them. I love the Merc sedans and coupes, but find the design language doesn't translate well to the SUV's other than the G-Wagon which has retained its classic looks.
Interior wise they feel a lot cheaper due to more plastic materials/lower grade leathers and weirdly the seat is angled towards the center console and is very obvious. The GLS is likely to have a bigger third row and cargo hold, but it can't really hold a candle to the X5 and 7's interior especially when it comes to materials and quality.
