Anyone buy the eBay versions. Look nearly factory to me.

I think some work looking at a powered set (retractable) which maybe more useful if you actually want something to use as a real step.

I offered the seller $342 and he accepted. 5% eBay buck + TopCash link through dropped them to ~$322. I can live with that.

The exact procedure for the OEM running boards is somewhat "elusive" as the search words to find it are not always that obvious - after a decent search I still could not find it. However, the link above shows you how to remove the lower side trim piece or side skirt, which is required to install the running board pieces. After that piece is removed, the running board support (what actually supports your weight) and the new trim/cover pieces, essentially bolt in place. The OEM running board retrofit kit, with associated parts, can be found below:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=03_5172

Keep in mind that for a full OEM install, whether you use the eBay kit or the OEM retrofit kit, you will still need to get the new trim pieces painted. But the OEM kit pieces may come painted if you order it from a dealer and provide them with your paint code.

As for the retractable kit, the install instructions that I found appear to have it bolt to the under body of the X7, at pre-existing frame locations, so no drilling of new holes should be necessary (which is a good thing). Then you will need to run the wires into the cabin for power and control - again they appear to use an existing rubber grommet spot which will help to keep things nice and weather proof if done properly. There is a small control module for the retractable running boards that also needs to be installed in the X7, presumably behind the dash somewhere - which should not be that hard for any stereo/car alarm system installer. Power and ground looks pretty easy, as you run the wiring straight to the engine compartment (I personally would take the extra effort and do an OEM install directly to the forward fuse box vice a line just to the battery terminal in the engine compartment).

You also need to tap into the CAN bus in order to control the running boards with opening/closing the door - and BMW has several CAN bus systems in the X7. In the instructions I found, they tap into the appropriate CAN bus at the inside rear view mirror. I have not bothered looking close at the CAN bus routing inside the X7, but I would try to find a better and closer CAN bus tap point, preferably along the floor next to the seats, to prevent having to run a wire all the way up the A-pilar, across the roof line, over to the rear view mirror.

Either install does not look too bad for an experienced shop, albeit a bit more advanced DIY install if you are so inclined. I would use a quality shop for the retractable ones though as BMW interiors require a certain amount of TLC if you want a quality job done without damaging interior trim pieces.

Attached are the install instructions for the retractable running boards that I received for one of the kit makers. It is what I used to base my install opinions and assessment above for the retractable kit.

Version 1 ( manual in previous messages )

Price: 336USD incl shipping to Shanghai ( Russia version, more moisture and salt protected. 35-40 dollars higher that std version) + 300USD shipping to Azerbaijan.

It is MUCH cheaper than on Ebay ( 1200-1900USD )
