The X7 is a champ in the snow (on stock tires)

I've been a big proponent of snow tires, every BMW I've owned in the last 15 years has had them.

But when the X7 first came out it had a rare tire size and it was tough to find snow tires. Then here in the northeast US we've had very mild winters, haven't had any meaningful accumulation since I've owned the X7. So I never bothered to get them, just ran all year round on the stock all season runflats.

Well, today was the day. We got 24" last week and today another 6" was on the ground when I had to venture out to get the family Super Bowl meal spread. 6" of really thick snow atop a ground layer of ice and white hard-pack. I was concerned just getting out of the driveway on my runflats.

Well, I needn't have worried at all. Easy as can be, no problems at all. Twice I had to stop at traffic lights on an incline, both times just accelerated naturally and had no wheel spin whatsoever. Very impressed.

Holy hell, you're getting a ton more than us here in Alaska.

Great to hear your all seasons are working well!

Yup, here in PA we got 28” before Christmas in one storm. Then just got 20” last week in a storm. It was a very dry summer and fall and we are now making it up. For me, I worked in a set of AS winter wheels in my original vehicle purchase for when we travel down to Florida in Feb but with Covid we didn’t go this year and my X7 is in storage in my garage. I have other vehicles for my everyday winter needs.

Yeah, the northeast is making up for lost time. The last two years we've gotten trace amounts of snow and this one week we're getting crushed.

Going skiing tomorrow, ski rack on the roof is all loaded up, so no complaints.

I've been flying around in my ASRF's here in CO through different conditions, and so far, I'm not concerned. I'll likely get a dedicated snow set at some point, but not bad under various conditions.

I’ve got dedicated snow tires just due to the sheer weight and of course the cost of the vehicle to repair if anything happens.

I will say I’ve always used AS in the past on all my SUVs with no real issues until...until I hit ice. Brand new Acura RDX with AS slid all the way down my hill and into the intersection...dedicated tires would have helped, but the AS were useless.

If you got snow on the ground and it’s not hard packed or iced up, then AS are fine for most driving. It’s when you hit ice and then snow tires will perform better, but still may not save you.

Studded or chained up tires are the best. Saw an ad recently that they were trying to develop a set of snow tires where the studs come out on demand and then retract when not needed. Nest of both worlds.

Ice wll take you out no matter what you have on the car. Unless studded or chains.

Guess the groundhog was right about more winter.

I use a studded BMW winter set on my 330i. Especially since it's RWD.

I’ve been pretty happy with the x7m50i on the as 21’s so far here on Long Island with the snow we’ve gotten on the last week. It’s been great. No complaints.

No doubt! Dedicated snow is always best. I opted out this year since I haven't been doing a lot of driving up in the mountains. Next year could be another story. Love to hear from someone who has taken their X7 with 21" ASRF through some heavy snow conditions (not ice).

We're in upstate New York on vacation skiing and the X7 performed like a champ on the stock All Season Runflats.

Atop the 20" and the following 8" we got another 6" and on unplowed roads and parking lots at our resort the wheels did not slip and at no time did I feel like we were going to get stuck. That's ice under hardpack with 6" of fresh thick snow and untreated and the X7 was carving the road on inclines and declines as if I had snow tires on.

I'm normally a big proponent of winter tires but, got to be honest, I don't think it's necessary with the X7. It's proven that in NYC with our typical slush/few inches its got it easy and now in the deep stuff too upstate, wow.

I have the M50i with the staggered 22's. On the first snow, I knew I had to get winter tires. I decided to buy a set of OEM 21's that 9.5" wide at all wheels and then had Blizzaks mounted all per BMW's recommendations. It drives like a tank through the snow now and I notice NO handling or noise differences on dry pavement. My wife's X6 M50i has the same tire but on 20's and it drives like it has gummy bears for tires. Mine are run flat and hers are not.

I am in NYC and bought the Pirelli Snow staggered 22 setup and put them on the original wheels. I have now driven through two major snows and they are perfect. I am sure 22s are not an ideal snow wheel size but I didn't want to buy new wheels for the snow as I have done in the past. Highly recommend the 22 setup. They are available on tirerack with insurance.

Give it a try- start conservatively- and let me know what you think.

Again, just to clarify, I am not driving enthusiastically, I am not speeding, I am not pushing it, it’s just safe family dad driving.

recently had too much snow in Austin, TX that city can handle and I had to go out for an emergency call from my friend. My X7 M50i was running on 22" performance tires (summer). We had moments were it had slight skidding but at no point it looked less confident. I was driving with sports mode, manual gear and using gears 1, 2 and 3 max.

While the car handles but not fun either

PS: I don't recommend summer tires in winter conditions as normal use
