Shortage on LED sky lounge and rear shades

Placed an order for a 40i in late June. (Arctic gray and ivory/blue int) Now told it cannot be built with the LED sky lounge nor the rear electronic window shades due to a production shortage. Anyone else ?

I’m told the electronic shades may be discontinued but LED will be back for 2020.
Current owners, are these features “worth it”?

I have been offered to build anyway vs wait for MY2020. Thoughts?

Update- dealer offered same pricing/options on a 2020 build so will wait on that.

But a heads up to buyers shopping ‘19s that these options *may* not be available...

I have both options and here's my take:

LED Sky Lounge - Nice to show off to your family and friends at first but not a must have.

Rear Shades - Hardly ever use them so I could live without them.

What really matters is which options do you want. If both options matter to you, wait for the 2020.

When did you find out it was not available. I ordered my x40i on June 19th with the rear shades and have not heard a word about them

I'm a fan of both of these features. I would wait for them if I was re-ordering the car.

The sky lounge is a cute gimmick, but I love it. I’d wait for that. If you have rear passengers a lot, I’d also want the shades. My kids put them up quite a lot. I find it ridiculous that they keep running out of supplies.

What was your original production week? I also ordered the Sky lounge and the scheduled production week was 28, so it is currently in production. But I haven't heard anything from my dealer yet about possible shortages. I actually want to delay and move to MY2020 if possible and also add rear wheel steering.

IMHO...

- The Sky Lounge is Cool but that's it.
- The rear shades are worth it if you live in a sunny country like I do

I think its always worth waiting a few weeks for a later model if you are not in a desperate rush to replace your existing car. Mind you, by the time you can order the 2020, you may start wondering what 2021 will bring...

As an additional thought, I was unable to get my X7 with the ventilated seats. There isn't a day goes by when I wish I had them installed....basically every time my shirt sticks to my back. Therefore, decide what you truly can't live without (in a first world problems kind of way)and then make sure you get what you need. Living in a world of regret isn't much fun...

Why doesn’t BMW either wait to restock supplies or just be better with supply chain management in the first place. How does anyone find it acceptable that they continue to build a custom ordered car without certain features and say ohh well we ran out.

I know for sure that if they would build my vehicle without certain features, I would refuse acceptance.

Yep, and if everyone did that, the dealerships would be more likely to push back on corporate to try to resolve that.

Agreed, but while that may work in the US, it probably won't in other markets. In my case I was able to choose an X7 or an X5 if I want this size/type of vehicle. The X7 is an M50d and the X5 is a 30d Sport - thats it! There is a configurator screen, but you can choose the car colour and the seat colour and even then sometimes that choice is limited.

My X7 came with everything I wanted except the ventilated seats. The only way around would be to go to a parallel importer. It would work out cheaper, but BMW will not service the vehicle - so the risk (for me at least) wasn't worth it. Therefore, if I want the X7, I have to forgo the option....

If you need the third row wait for the features and get the X7. Those were the two features I wanted and big reasons why we got the 7 over the 5. So yes, wait. Its crazy you can't even get led lights. I can go over to Lowes and buy those

What the hell? BMW really needs to get its act together on supply logistics. This would make what, the 5th and 6th item that BMW has "run out of" on the new X5 and X7?

I'm ordering my X7 as my ultimate vehicle to last me years and years. If they tell me there's a supply shortage on ANYTHING when I order, or it goes into production, I'm gonna be pissed.

We enjoyed the sky lounge feature but after having all interior glass tinted for heat reduction purposes the LED light strength was decreased by over 80% in my gross estimate.

No rear power shades wouldn’t hold me back but if you have children it may be more of a necessity. Currently they are more of a luxury for our purposes but we do keep them deployed for heat reduction.
