G28 3 Series Long Wheelbase Revealed
Why not just get a G30? I feel like this would screw up the handling and turn radius of this G20 Limo lol. Is it still 50/50 weight distribution? May need a bit more engine to cope with the added heft.

Well the long wheelbase model is only for the Chinese market. I'm pretty sure that the people in China that buy this value the extra legroom in the rear a lot more than handling or 50/50 weight distribution. I doubt that most will ever sit in the driver seat anyway so if anything it's the driver that has to deal with it.
As for why someone will get this over a G30, the G30 standard wheelbase is over 100,000 RMB more than a long wheelbase G20. They also need to watch out for the engine displacement as going over a certain amount will bring a crazy amount of taxes.

with trade "talks" and expected economic downturn looming over their heads, the Chinese have to be more cognizant about "frugality." Time to buckle up, no pun intended.

Again it might be different for the Chinese market. Like the F30 generation which was available with a 1.6L turbo 4 or 1.5L turbo 3 cylinder.

US almost always gets larger engine as baseline vs other market, LWB 3 and 5 series are both more less exclusive China. Also one thing different in Asia is its much cheaper to get a driver, a lot middle level manager can afford a driver.
Edit: no idea how big rear seat is for LWB 3 series but my G30 5 series has longer wheelbase than E32 7 series LWB (though total length is still shorter, thank god...), so 5 series LWB makes a lot sense if you ask me (to be driven around), 3 series LWB I guess just the next logical follow up Edit 2: on engine for example in the US 5 series starts at 530i while a lot market starts at 520i (for the petrol) |

Yep. There is a hierarchy to car ownership and status in China and although you may be able to afford a driver, which is something alien to most in the West these days, you may only be allowed to buy a 3er (in a way that most in the West will be aggressively alien towards, not that it matter). So a LWB 3 gives you the room you need and keeps you in the pecking order that, again, the West no longer has a concept of but still exists in other parts of the world.

I find many people may somehow misunderstand china and Chinese.
As a Chinese,i still feel i dont understand my country in every aspect. But i can feel my country is growing fast, maybe faster than most part of the world. I think you guys should know china is a big country and more than 1.5 billion people. So you can see many appearance that unbelievable happens(it is not only unbelievable for you,it is also unbelievable for people who live in beijing or shanghai like me).For example, car tag of Shanghai is at least worth 13000 USD,and not everyone in Shanghai is able to apply for this tag.But I still feel this policy is useful and acceptable for most people in shanghai because of traffic jam and population. Before judge someone,at least you should know it.I think if you have chance to get here, you would find out this is a crazy place and i promise you will love here. |

Sorry this reply doesn't help to this thread's discussion

As a Chinese also, I still don't understand why the government has the right to ban the people's right to purchase a car by restricting the licence plates. In US' Bay Area, I think there are jams during rush hours all the time, and I believe nobody, either the people or the government, is thinking about banning the purchase of cars. People will choose other traffic options by themselves if they really cannot suffer. And none of these price reasons is the real cause of the born of LWB cars like G28, in my opinion. I'm living in Shenzhen now, a city near Hong Kong. As an out-of-towner, I will have the right to purchase a license plate after July this year and choose a China-made BMW (very complicated reason to save tax). And I'm planning to purchase a G28 since the timing is about right. The reasons that I will choose a G28 are multifolds: 1. Model comparison 1: G01 X3 made in China is standard wheel base with 50/50 weight balance, but is still too expensive and the inner decoration is too mundane. 2. Model comparison 2: G38 LWB 5 series is a good option, and I like the steel feel of the window knobs and luxury dashboard, but it's too long, and too expensive. 3. Model comparison 3: The manufacture of the current F35 LWB 3 in China has just stopped today, and there are quite a bit in stock for final sales, for as high as 23% discount (lowest during the past years), but the color is very limited, and no customization available, offering only 320 Li with low-profile tuning B48B20C engine. 4. New G28 satisfies the vanity of my emotion that I'm among the 'successful' class of people in the society, that I can afford to keep a BMW with real 4-cylinder engine, not Honda-feel like 3-cylinder fake-BMW.. 5. G28 has big enough space and luxury feel in the rear seat area. So that my parents-in-law would be extremely satisfied when sitting in the car with myself being the driver and servant. With this car, it's a good opportunity to suck up to them and show a masculine ability to raise a 'wealthy' family for their daughter and grandchildren.. 6. When my wife drives the G28, it'll be just perfect. 5 series are too chuncky and business for her, and it would be more difficult to park a 5 than 3, especially in crowded areas, although the G28 is already longer than the original 5. bimmer456 called G28 a limo, I think to some point, it is true lol. 7. It's still fun to drive G28 although the 50/50 weight is somehow gone. But if you check the G38's chassis, you will find some adjustments of weight to make it almost 50/50. I believe for G28 there might also be some treatment. 8. I don't like mechanical hand brake. I like big touch screen. I like exhaust on both sides. I like the blade-style key fob. And I really like the appearance of the G20+. 9. The G28 would be cheap enough even without discount compared to X3 and LWB 5. So that I can comfort my wife with this brand-new BMW and save money, and buy an used manual 1-series M next year. Although I have listed so many points, I think point 9 is the most important one, lol. |
