X8 designation wasn't a joke.

I suspect the BMW barge will follow suit. No reason to waste all that engineering.

BMW X7 Concept Coming Next Month With A Fuel Cell Powertrain

Quote:
The Frankfurt Motor Show kicks off next month and a new report is indicating BMW will use the event to introduce an X7 concept.

This isn't the first time we've heard about this particular rumor but BMW Blog is now reporting the concept will feature a fuel cell powertrain.

Nothing is official as of yet but BMW has been working on fuel cell technology for years and recently displayed a 5-Series GT prototype at Hannover Messe. The prototype's fuel cell converted hydrogen into electricity which feed a 245 PS (180 kW) electric motor.

At the time, BMW said the fuel cell enabled the model to have "emission-free mobility" as well as "everyday usability thanks to fast refueling times and an appetite for covering long distances."

It remains unclear if the X7 concept will use the same powertrain as the 5-Series GT prototype but BMW's Klaus Fröhlich has previously suggested fuel cells only make sense in models that slot above the 5-Series.

Regardless of whether or not a fuel cell is offered on the production model, the X7 will go on sale late next year to battle the Mercedes GLS.

Rumor: BMW Concept X7 coming to Frankfurt Auto Show with a fuel cell drivetrain

Quote:
In September, BMW will finally unveil the highly-touted X7 SUV. The ultra-luxurious and large SUV has been teased for years now and it’s finally ready for public viewing. Due out early next month, the X7 will go to the Frankfurt Auto Show in a concept guise and according to our sources, with a fuel cell drivetrain. In 2015, BMW unveiled their vision of a future fuel cell-powered BMW. At their secret facility in Miramas, France, BMW let us test drive a 5 Series Gran Turismo equipped with the new technology. At the time, the chief developer of BMW, Klaus Fröhlich said that a hydrogen fuel cell platform only makes sense in vehicles above the 5 Series.

The reasons for this are simple: a car with a fuel cell offers the possibility to cover extremely long distances, a requirement that doesn’t apply to most city drivers who can with an emission-free electric drive. Thanks to fast advancement of batteries, more and more electric cars will have a range of 400 kilometers or more, even without a fuel cell, which is more than sufficient for the customers in the compact class.

BMW now seems ready to apply the technology to their biggest car-to-date. Packing three full rows, the BMW X7 will also be the brand’s first true seven-seater. It will also have comparable luxury to the Range Rover and will even have trim levels that challenge the ‘Rover’s Autobiography line. So not only will it be the largest vehicle ever made by BMW but it should also be the most luxurious.

Aside from the fuel cell tech, BMW is likely to offer the X7 with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, alongside conventional engines. Sources have previously speculated that it will feature a selection of six and eight-cylinder engines, such as the 3.0-liter diesel in 30d, 40d and 50d guises and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter petrol V8 from the X6 xDrive50i.

A plug-in hybrid variant could be similar to the drivetrain used in the 740e, which packs a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder, 16-valve 255-hp engine, combined a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic), high-precision direct injection and eDrive 111-hp electric motor. Total power output of 322 hp.
BMW will officially bring the X7 to the market in early 2019 and will be built at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

New BMW X7 Gets Rendered Into Reality

Quote:
The BMW X7 is coming to take on the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover, but nobody outside the company knows exactly what it will look like.

Nevertheless, inspired by the numerous spy shots and the design of the smaller X5, Aksyonov Nikita has rendered it into reality, and the images look, well familiar.

Whether these CGIs are close to reality is a good question, the answer of which should come next month, when the Germans are expected to preview their new flagship SUV with a concept, at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

As far as the final production variant goes, this should hit the market towards the end of 2018, underpinned by the CLAR architecture, which is shared with the new 5- and 7-Series, and will eventually be adopted by the next generation of the 3-Series and X5.

Inside its long body it will have seating for up to 7 occupants in three rows, and these should make it attractive for both Chinese and American consumers.

The engine lineup will include a host of gasoline and diesel units, possibly joined by a plug-in hybrid. An M Performance model is also believed to be on the table, powered by the new twin-turbo V8 engine that sits under the hood of the new M5.

Update - December 14, 2017:

It's been months since we spotted the last X7 prototype, but here it is wearing all new camouflage. The G07 X7 will be introduced in 2018, at nearly the same time the next-gen G05 X5 is launched. The X7 will come to the U.S. in x40i, x40d, and x50i models and will be very similar mechanically to G05 X5, with the main differentiation in creature comforts and the 3rd row specific configuration. There will be 6 and 7-seat versions and climate control will have 5 independent zones.

BMW X7 Prototype Re-Emerges

This camo-mule looks better than the concept does. That IMO, was a disaster. Glad I am not in the market for a whale of these proportions.

Really? I am seriously disappointed in your product knowledge. Sounds like an Audi or MB fan trying a feeble attempt at trolling.

BMW does not make an SUV. They make a bunch of SAV but have never made an SUV.

TBF looking great in these latest shots.

To me it also hasn't gone un noticed .... with regards to CAMO... there is a new hierarchy even for this!

Sexy black with white lines = luxury models
Crazy white swirls = standard

Haha, please tell me you're kidding. Does Subaru not actually sell cars, but love?

A marketing person told me this, so it's got to be true.

And because BMW created a slogan to describe their SUV, you're just going to run with that? What is a Cayenne Turbo S? If you call it an SAV, so help me god...

BMW's slogan is Ultimate Driving Machine not Sport Activity Vehicle. Once again one is a slogan and the other is a class of car.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the part where you said they'd never made an SUV. Like you actually believe they created some dumb thing called an SAV and no one else can come to that party.

If that's true, can we also call any BMW with Runflats a Complete POS?
