No, it's not.

Salary is exactly the amount of money necessary to keep someone employed.

And regarding Kimi's performance last year, I think he drove just fine. It was down to the car and we know that they gave up.

But perception is everything in F1 and the bottom line is that Ferrari were going to sign Alonso (despite their denials) and (for obvious reasons) they were not going to fire Massa.

It was an academic decision for Ferrari, but I would argue that it was not the right one.

They (obviously) regret doing exactly the same thing with Schumacher.

In either case, salary was never an issue.

If Kimi was only getting paid $8 million, he'd still be in F1. Salary was THE issue.

How, pray tell, could you know that?

Because he turned down a low ball offer from McLaren because he had a choice of making $50 million from Ferrari to take a sabbatical or $25 million and he could race for another team. Nobody would even pay him $25 million to make up the difference. So theoretically, he would be losing guaranteed money to race this season.

If Kimi was not getting paid so much, he wouldn't have that problem. Or...if he could drive to make himself worth what he was being paid, he'd still be around.

Could not the quality of seats available have more to do with it than just the money?

Or maybe (and I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out), maybe he really was just sick of F1 and needed a break.

No, in this case it was all about the Green $$$ ....
Kimi already achived his goal of winning a WDC and he said before that he is not interested (or capable) of going after multiple championships....

He also stated he'd only continue if he got a championship capable car. That knocked Toyota and Renault out of the running and the only team left was McLaren. They couldn't put up the dough so Kimi's out.
