Any cold and flu recovery tips?

Other than water and rest.

What works for you?

I feel like death warmed up. Caught a bad cold. Hoarse voice. Blocked nose. Sore throat.

I need to make it through this week and I am off next week.

Work as a busy Senior Therapist (CBT) and it is always a nightmare cancelling and rescheduling clients.

Thanks

Zinc, organic yogurt, and vitamin C. tons of it. There isn't much you can do for viral infections other than battle them naturally and ride it out.

I like Emergen-C as good way to get vitamins. NyQuil and DayQuil to ease the symtoms.

Like steam room or steam shower - outside crisp fresh air - lots of water and tea. Nutrient dense food - incorrectly or not I think sugary foods make me feel sicker.
Brocoli, grapefruit, tomato - might be psychological but eating clean makes me feel a little better.

One thing I do that seems to help is getting real hot when sleeping. Turn the electric blanket up, put extra blankets and wear sweatshirts so that when I sleep I actually induce a fever and sweat. Mind you it is a very uncomfortable sleep, kind of like a few hours of hell but it works.

Vit C to nearly bowels loose, measured in grams.
Tincture of Echinacea, Goldenseal, and Yin Chiang. (Prefer the ALCOHOL based versions for some reason)

It turned into a virus. Nothing to do but ride out. Doc has signed me off for a week.

Good timing with the resurrection. I have a cold again. There is some bug going around the office. So I will give the soup a try.

First signs...50mg chelated Zinc tablet before bed. Pretty much takes care of colds 90% of the time. The flu is a bitch and if u actually have it there's not much you can do besides bed all day and plenty of fluids.

Also Vitamins C & D3 help immune boost.

Here is what works for me (I'm in Canada, so hopefully you can get this stuff in your location):
- Lots of sleep. NeoCitran Nighttime before bed (I think Theraflu Extra Strenght is the US equivalent) - this stuff is magical.
- Buckley's lozenges for cough and sore throat - portable and convenient.
- Ginger+Lemon+honey home-made tea, lots of it. You could throw some garlic in it too.
- Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey for a good measure, because why not. Really sweet, but it burns, in a good way.
I take vitamins daily, so nothing special in that respect.
I also find that fasting speeds up recovery tremendously.

Normally I do not get sick, but if I feel any symptoms, the above setup makes it all go away in 2-3 days max, sometimes overnight.

Yes. But not water. You need calories. I got through the flu on vanilla Boost. You will have a fever but if you bundle up in sweats that will drive your fever higher. You can take Tylenol for the fever if it gets high. I went to over 102.

And ride it out. It will take a week till you're feeling better. And a week after that till your 100%.

PS-Yes I had a flu shot and was on Tamiflu immediately which tends to mitigate the symptoms.

Tamiflu is you can get a prescription. The others have been mentioned here, zinc and vitamin c. Nasal decongestants, and lozenges. Influenza is viral so any antivirals work best on it. Ride it out for a week or so. Bundling up is good, increased temps is your increased immune system fighting off the virus. The higher temps will kill off to he virus and stop replication if the virus, as it's not a conducive environment for viral growth. But be sure to change your sheets, and towels often as the symptoms subside. BTW I'm a nurse

Also, 2-3 liters of fluid daily, echinacea boosts your immune functioning, and as Rich said, increased calories, but just keep in mind you might want to stay away from boost, as it has dairy.

For the sore throat
3oz rum (stronger the better)
I tbsp honey
Half of a lemon freshly squeezed
Tsp black pepper
Mix it up and chug it, you'll feel better in no time

The doc diagnosed Australian flu. Some colleagues had been to Oz and returned unwell. After 6 days in bed, multiple fevers, the runs, blood in mucus, dehydration... it was good to get back to work this Monday!

The runs can be combatted with a BRAT diet
Banana
Rice
Applesauce (applesauce has pectin in it, which apples don't)
Toast

When I feel like Im getting sick or actually get sick I like to increase my BCAA intake. I feel it helps me recovery quicker.

No offense, but your body isn't creating heat to fight the cold. The heat is a byproduct of your body's immune system. Your immune system has increased activity (to fight off the foreign bodies) and the excess cellular activity is what creates the heat. Excess heat is also productive to the destruction of those foreign bodies, as it produces a habitat that exceeds the temp for the foreign bodies to replicate.

BCAA's are the building blocks for proteins, and increased proteins will help shorten the time frame
