22" High Performance Tires in the snow.

Has anyone driven their X7 with 22" high performance tires in the snow? If so, how was it?

Huh? You mean high performance summer tires? They aren't going to go anywhere. Wrong compound, smooth tread design, no sipes for traction, etc.

I had experience once driving on high performance tires on a snowy day and I'm never doing it again. It's the worse thing we can do to ourselves and others on the road. The rubber compound becomes too hard and feels like a rock on ice.

we had an E53 X5 4.4 on all seasons. I have a dip shit friend that went to Tahoe on his X5 4.4 on 19" summer tires. I told him to swap with me before he went. The idiot slipped and slided all over the place. He put chains on and he messed up his wheels and wheel wells because the tires were too wide in the back to clear the chains.

Don't be an idiot and go up to snow and ice with summer tires.

The risk you take driving on summer tires in the winter is absolutely not worth any "savings". You're risking the safety of the other motorists on the road and you w/ your occupants. Secondly any "savings" by not purchasing a dedicated set of winters will quickly be erased when you have to repair your vehicle, take the depreciation hit on the CF report and your insurance will increase. In the end is it really worth risking it?

It was my third car in the garage, a 911 4S only to be taken it out for dry days. That day the snow was totally unexpected, too early in the season and I was trying to get back home. I was all over the freeway bcos roads were untreated, authorities were not prepared for snow yet! And the scary part were 18 wheelers, they don't slow down whatsoever!

I super promise pinky swear I will NEVER drive on ice or snow with summer tires.

I couldn't get pass the design etc of the 21's so I ordered 22's on my soon to be m50i. Going with Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires....either 275 40 r22 or 285 40 r22 on all four corners. Tires can fit on a rim up to 11" wide.

I believe the M50i has staggered tire sizes for the front and rear. Is there no issue with using the same size winter tire of all four corners?

Either of those sizes can fit on a rim up to 11" so 10.5 rear rims shouldn't pose an issue

I had to drive it with the summers these past few weeks in Ontario because the company that I ordered wheels from is behind.

I'd say, don't drive it if you can avoid it. I've even resorted to ferrying my kids and family in our 2-door convertible RWD M4 when there was snow on the ground because I have winter tires on the M4.

Is there a particular set of aftermarket tires that are all season I could replace the performance tires with that fit and work well for the X7 m50i if i order it with 22" wheels? Otherwise I need to order the 21" wheels but I'd rather have the 22".

All-season means they do not perform well in any season. In my opinion all-season are really just a three season tire or for areas where temperatures may drop a bit but there is never any real accumulation.

Couldn't find any solution for 22" and went with 21" All seasons. I really wanted those 22" though!

All season tires are essentially "No season tires". They just let you pass through all the seasons. Back in Iowa, I had no choice but to get dedicated snow tires even though I had All seasons on my GL450. But in North East, I could manage where I live. It all depends on your locality and how fast they clean. If you have big hills and steep driveways then All seasons won't work. But my M5C has winter tires because I don't want to drive that beast on All Seasons during summer.

I had to drive 5 hours in a snowstorm this week. I am so, so, so glad I got a set of 21” inch wheels and summer tires. Even then it was nerve wracking. I could not have done it without them...

So if this is my daily driver and I live in North Texas where we do usually have a day or two of ice each season, should I just get the 21" wheels with all season tires?

Also, if I live on a long caliche drive way, would the all season tires be more resistant to gravel damage than the performance tires?

Not currently! The issue is no all season tire available for the rear size in 22".

Just know that high performance summer tires are usually not recommended for use below 40-45 degrees. Can you get away with driving them in zero degree weather? Sure. But, stopping distances and ultimate road holding will be reduced. The rubbers "durometer" is wrong for cold temps.

If you get ice occasionaly and want to drive in the winter, then all seasons obviously are going to be the better choice, but not the best choice.

I personally don't think a gravel road is going to make much difference between tire types. Sometimes summer tires have a little less tread depth, but other than that, tires are pretty tuff.

If you want the BEST... high performance summer tires for summer and dedicated winter wheels and tires are the only way to go. But, that is up to your individual decision. You wouldn't run a marathon in boots and/or climb Mount Everest in tennis shoes.
