x7 40i powerful?
Looking at getting the X7 40i. My question to everyone out there especially owners of the 40i, do you think the V6 turbo has enough power. I know it won't be fast as the V8, and I am not going to race the car or anything. Just wanted to know if the V6 has more than adequate power for the weight of the car. I live in San Francisco and the hills can be challenging at times. I have a family of 5 and hoping that the V6 can handle all of us going up the hills. Thanks

I just traded in my x5 50i and opted for the x7 in 40i version. I think it has plenty of power. It makes a lot of torque down low, so you do not have to rev it out to get good acceleration. I live in the mountains and it goes up and down steep grades at 80 mph with ease. It may drop down one gear here and there vs the V8 but not that big of deal. I loved the V8, but since I bought the x7 mainly to travel in, I figured why not get the 40i that gets better gas mileage, can go farther on a tank of gas, and costs less. The inline six is the smoothest engine ever. I'll always love the V8, but imho the 6cyl is more than adequate. The v8 is a beast though and if you have any doubts and dont care about the price difference and gas mileage get it.

BMW does not use V6 engines, they use inline 6 cylinders.
the 40i goes 0-60 in 5.4 seconds as tested by Motor Trend. It can tow 7500 lbs. It has a great 8 speed transmission and the B58 engine has a very flat torque curve. You don't need to worry. Quote:

I bought a X7 50i off the showroom floor because of the deal they offered and the V8 is an exciting engine to be sure but if I buy another X7 in the future it will be the 40i inline 6 model. My first ever X7 I test drive was a 40i and the inline 6 moved it very well and it was noticeably quieter than the 50i V8. And you could gain a 4-5 MPG savings.

If it's anything like that, I can assure you that you don't need more power. In addition, I've yet to see a single review, stating the 40i would be underpowered. In fact, some reviewers were positively surprised how well balanced and smooth the 40i was while still delivering power. This is just one example - Did you say 'SAN FRANCISCO'? Then you REALLY want to see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0ffdD0E1NY Personally, I don't drive that much and could have lived with the lower MPG of the M50i. But then I asked myself why I should even burn more gas through my 10 minute commute where I would have never been able to take advantage of the 523 horses? In addition, we are going to get two new vehicles in our household at the same time and I'm probably going to invest the saved $$ on the Lincoln Aviator with the plug-in hybrid option for my mother who is driving much more than me (15K miles/year). I have to admit that I'm a bit jealous about the power-concept the Lincoln will be offering. 494 HP and - get this - 630 lb./ft. of torque is quite impressive. |

Thanks for your valued opinions. You are correct Like2short, it's an inline 6. I had the V8 on my mind. And thanks 760Lifan for the video. I haven't seen that one before. I have been on youtube looking at videos of the x7 and never came a crossed that one before.

More than adequate power.
A burst of acceleration whenever needed, and the engine rpms are not so high that it makes the engine sound stressed. I have never had a situation where I wished I could have accelerated quicker... and I have never needed to stomp on the pedal when trying to zip by someone. It doesn't feel overpowered, but has plenty. ... Enough power that You still have to finesse the gas pedal a little, so it doesn't jerk when accelerating from a standstill. It feels just right. I got about 23 mpg on my last 6 hr road trip from Philly up too the Adirondacks in upstate NY. |

The loaner 40i i was driving had plenty of power and made me rethink getting the M50i because of the big cost difference. In the end, I still went with the M50i bc it allows me to carry the family when needed and I don’t sacrifice the feel of a fast v8 that I’m so accustomed to driving around with in my previous sedans.

I test drove a 40i, I remember how the vehicle jerked me back when I just tapped on the gas coming out of the dealer's lot. I was pleasantly surprised to be reminded how well BMW married the engine to the transmission.
Everyday driving I think the 40i is perfect. |

I bought the 50i only because I tow a camper with it. Sure the 40i would do fine too, but I like that extra power when towing. Less transmission down shifts ect.
I did test drive the 40 and it was plenty of power and silky smooth everyday driving. |

I’m a reallllll big fan of my 50i, but i haven’t heard any 40i owners complaining about lack of power. I’m sure you’ll love it.

We don't have a lot of hills where I live, but a week after taking delivery of our 40i we took a road trip through Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Even through Sedona, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and Santa Fe, I never felt that I was lacking power. I've not driven around San Francisco, but I think you'll be fine with the 40i, unless you plan on towing.

Sorry, I only did normal street driving with both. Did not take them to a course, or get to throw them around. I did not notice ANY difference in handling between the 40i and 50i on the roads, only more power. Neither model I drove had DHP.

I drove both. Drove 40i without DHP and 50i with DHP. The difference in the nose weight of the 2 was very noticeable for me. The 40i felt smoother and lighter on take off. On the 50i however, you can feel the extra weight when you are pressing the pedal and the way the car responds on take off. U have to press the pedal more and it's not as smooth. Now once you are up and going, the 50i has a better response when you accelerate at higher speed.

Picked my x7 40i up a week ago. I have always had 8 cylinder vehicles. Took the X7 on an 800 mile highway trip and found it to be more powerful and more responsive than my other vehicles. The 6 was a good choice
My mileage was 25.1. I am quite pleased! |
