"i" stands for International ... when BMW started selling vehicles worldwide is when they started adding the "i".

How do I know you ask .... I sold BMW's for 9 years and it was obviously taught me at some point!

I thought the "i" had to do with the fuel system.. ? I'm not 100% sure, but I thought when BMW switched into using fuel injection they put the "i" in there and since then it sort of stuck, as a way to differentiate the models that use regular fuel vs. diesel .. ?

i = injection

AFAIK

e = einspritzer (or however it's spelled). basically means same thing.

roburado and markE90M3 are right, the i stands for injection..
In (I think) the early eighties BMW (and other manufacturers) start using a new type of fuel injection that increased the engine's performance.
Nowadays the 'i' tells you that the car is a petrol and the 'd' that it's a diesel..

Yes, it for Injection

You have to go a long way back to find carburator cars that dont have the i

For example with the old E30 3 Series there were 316 and later 316i, the 316 has a carburetor and the 316i had fuel injction

My first Beemer was a 1602ti -- it had dual carbs, basically a 'sports' set-up. After a standard 1602 and 2002, I got a 2002tii, which had injection, hence the extra "i".

The "i" stands for "intermittent". The "d" stands for "dependable". Those damned Europeans get all the best cars.

Timely question. See June 2005 Roundel magazine, page 7. You guys are all BMW CCA members and receive it, right?

Most of the time BMW has used "i" to signify fuel injected, but not always!

The 2002 ti was carbureted. The ti stood for Touring International (yes, 9 years does get you something).

The injected version was the 2002 tii.

So, to clear it once and for all... which one is it? "i" for injection or "i" for international. Someone should get an answer from a German engineer. Selling BMW's for 9 years is a long time.
