Digital iPhone Key to Lock?
I've been testing out my digital key via the iPhone wallet and can't seem to get the car to lock with it. In all honesty, unlocking seems a bit buggy too. Takes about 30 seconds of standing there holding the phone near the handle and grasping/ pulling to get it to open.
At this point I do not trust it enough to go keyless and use it more when I need to run out to the garage and grab something. Anyone else mastered this? Can you actually lock it with the digital key? I've ended up using the app to lock it as a stop gap. |

I usually use my Apple Watch vs my phone as it seems easier - but you don't touch the handle until it's "done its thing".
Hold your phone near the keyhole blank, with the upper part of your phone nearest the handle (you're essentially using Apple Pay). After 2-3 seconds the doors should either lock, or unlock. If it's not reliable - maybe a dealer visit? |

I've also felt it was a bit glitchy. No issues starting the car with it, but unlocking has been an issue a time or two. When that happens I'll use the app to unlock the car.

I was toying around with this the past few days. My experience has been consistent. Been able to constantly lock/unlock the car by pointing the phone at a particular place on the door handle. Also, make sure you point the top of the phone on the particular place in the door handle. HTH.

I use a iPhone 11pro and this feature works only on the driver's door. I Tap the top of the phone on the handle, not in the middle but a little to the right of the handle towards the lock/unlock sensor. HTH

I realized i was spending too much time finding the right spot on the door handle and seemed silly to people around me. Few of my friends made fun of me that I am massaging my phone all over the door handle on a 100k car. Overall, BMW really did a poor job with this one. They should have really used Bluetooth, instead of NFC.. like the Tesla's do. Now, I just carry my keys wherever I go

Does anyone know, if you buy a pre-owned vehicle, can the previous owner use their phone to unlock and start the car (assuming they had the key previously set up on their phone)?

You can remove the digital key associated with the car, which dealer most likely will do before you buy. You can easily delete if you purchase one privately owned.
