Short trips

My average daily drive in one operation is 13 minutes, leaving from a garage, covering about 5-6 miles.
On the weekends, usually I’m driving between about double that.

Only when we have a trip planned or so I need to go to office (once or twice every two weeks) is the driving longer than 30 miles/minutes.

Obviously short trips are harder on car due to fuel dilution and catalytic converter/sensors.

My question is based on these driving patterns, would the M50 be more problematic in terms of expected failure or issues than the x40 before 80k miles?

dont think so, aside from battery drain. the N63 was murder on batteries, not sure if it was fixed in later revisions, but the customer care pack for early N63s had the scheduled replacement of the batteries due to the electric water pump killing the batteries to cool the turbos after engine shut down. i am NOT sure if thats still an issue on the TU3 version of the N63

just make sure you change the oil yearly, sounds like you wont trip the interval by mileage

at the end of the day i would expect the b58 to be more reliable just due to less parts to break and the turbo being on the side vs in the V. but that isnt impacted by the driving pattern you describe, just a general observation.

My wife's daily "commute" (3 total stoplights- lol) is 14 miles round trip. On weekends, we don't typically use the X7 as our primary vehicle. We've had no unusual maintenance issues.

Use a battery tender to keep the battery conditioned and charged, short trips probably won’t charge the battery enough, but otherwise shouldn’t matter. We have s GLE and it barely gets driven, only issue has been a dead battery.

Short trips probably killed my wife's MB GL450 to the point we traded it in. Not sure what happened but after we replaced both batteries with brand new ones by the dealer the batteries kept dying every 3 weeks and the dealer could not find anything draining it. We ended up trading it for the X7 but I am concerned what the winter will look like for us since sometimes she drives from our garage to the gym which is 3 minutes away. Not good but we need to drive when it is -30F here.

Basically makes it a plug-in hybrid, only have to annoyingly pop the hood every time.

This. I charge my wife’s car battery once or twice per month as she drives 1.5 miles down hill to work and then 4 miles after work to daycare and home. Poor car rarely gets to full operating temperature. I can easily do this for the x7. Heck, we plug in the MY regularly as is.
