50i vs 40i depreciation
I tend to monitor prices of X7s around me all the time to stay aware of the market situation (at least on the west-coast).
One thing I have noticed that almost most pre-owened 40is are seeing a $10K discount after 30-60 days from listing, whereas the 2019 50i and the 2020-2022 M50i are holding their prices really well, at a much higher price than 40i (smaller depreciation ratio for 50is), and they are also selling rather quicker. Can anyone explain the difference in depreciation ratio between the two? Crazy that a 2019 50i (38K miles) is offered and selling at higher price than a lower mileage (15K miles) and many newer 2021 40i (not well optioned). Moreover, the 40i got a discount of $10K before it found a buyer, while the older higher mileage 50i sold rather quickly yet at the higher asking price. |

50i significantly more rare in production numbers. It’s always been that way. In 2019 I went through trying to order or buy a new G05 X5 50i M-Sport that was nicely optioned up but not fully optioned and it was a nightmare. My dealership used every resource and the numbers made was staggeringly low. Fast forward and my dealership owner ordered a fully loaded 2020 X7 M50i for his personal vehicle and it took almost 7 months for it to get delivered to him right as Covid hit. This was the absolute best/optimum time BMW was manufacturing pre Covid and it still took 7 months. Because of the Covid mess he offered it to me as he had other concerns with 13 other luxury car dealerships to figure out what to do with since the shut down was only going to be a temporary 2 week ordeal. Fast forward to today after Covid and any 50i even highly optioned is holding top dollar if you can even find one.

I looked at a couple X7 Alpinas also, but I was concerned about faster depreciation of those compared to the M50i, because they appeal to a much smaller market. So I went with the M50i, and have no regrets. Anyone know how well the XB7's hold their value? |

I would recommend current XB7 owners to NOT sell their vehicles and consider keeping them long term. |

I have two X7s but the one I like the most is the 2019 50i, which has almost every single option that anyone could pick with an MSRP of $121K+ in 2019 dollars/prices, including factory display key, and I made the right decision by choosing 21” wheels with straight/matching all-season tires. Luckily I was able to code it so am not missing any of the software features such as the 3D view for ASS and the automatic speed adjust to match/change to the posted sign automatically. I also swapped the front kidney grill to the black one because at that time the extended shadowline trim had excluded the front grille. This made it equivalent in features and appearance to the other 2022, but I still like it better (thought it has 20-35hp than M50is when the engine was tuned in 2020+).
My point is, because it is fully optioned, my salesman keeps joking each time he sees me asking me when I wana trade it in. To play a game, I let them give me an appraisal a few months ago and I was shocked that the trade in offer exceeded my expectations. I am still going to keep it anyway until the new gen X7 is released, but the other newer X7 I have will be gone soon (wife wants a PHEV X5 instead). |
