Driving Review 4.0iM

So both my Wife and I have driven the X7 for a decent amount of miles.
Our history of SUV's is as follows, '02 X5, '05 Cayenne S, '08 Escalade, '11 GLS 450, '14 GLS 450 and '17 GLS 450.
We've never driven an SUV, that is so well rounded as the X7. You really have no idea how fast you are going, unless you look at the speedo. On the highway, my Wife told me she didn't realize she was going 97 and that 80 felt like a joke. She's not a car enthusiast, but she LOVES this "ride" and simply classified the past GLS' as "clumsy".
I feel the same and also as a rear seat passenger last night, I've never felt so secure in the seat. Past GLS experiences, I've always felt sick around the turns, etc.
Handling is great and stopping power as well!
Power wise, it's superior to the '17 GLS' TT V6.
The exhaust note is also really nice, especially for a 6 banger. You actually get a burble after you juice the throttle.
Interior is super plush and comfortable!
BMW nailed this one out of the gate!

Is your 17 GLS a 450 or 550? 450 has a V6, only the 550 has a V8. You listed 17 GLS450 in your 2nd line.

Great review. Completely agree with you in all your points. For me too, the X7 40i is the best SUV I have ever driven, period. My history is from X5, Q7, ML550, LX570

Yes I'd say the same thing!l with your review.

That air suspension is magic!

The next GLS will also have air suspension, so expect Mercedes to improve too.

Are you driving the base suspension, or do you have the DHP?

That's a tough one, since we are comparing a '06 mid SUV to a '19 large. Can't compare tech, but as far as performance, they might be on par. I really don't remember! lol

Agreed, unfair to compare the current GLS to X7, but is what it is for the moment. Regardless, i'm sure the X will be better than the GLS for us type of BMW owners. MB i think appeals more to a market that doesn't emphasize on performance, because although MB "tries" they always miss the mark / balance required.

I have the standard air suspension, M sport and 22's. M sport brakes as well. Would love to drive the DHP to see how different it is ,but wasn't a priority for me to own.

That's fair enough. We're trading in our '16 Cayenne S E-Hybrid, so I just wanted to see if the handling and ride was on par.

Thanks for the info. I'm cross shopping the X5 vs X7 and was concerned with the X7s added weight, if the DHP is a "must have" option. Glad to hear it's not b/c I'd rather save the $$.

You will have to tell us that one! I've never owned a '16 S

If you don't need the extra room, I'd go with an x5...

Im going to step out on a limb and say the cayenne hands down will handle better than an x7. Same way as an x5 handling better than an x7. X7 should hands down have a more supple ride. Target market and physics leads me to this conclusion

Agreed, it's sort of apples and oranges. My initial point of mentioning, was that I simply had a lot of miles logged in a variety of SUVs and this big behemoth of an X7, is very impressing.

The cayenne is a better comparable to an x5 and both are quick!

Base engine cayenne and x5 are 0-60 in the 4.8 to 5.0 sec range.
