I just got out of break in, but it’s been great so far. I haven’t tuned it yet, or put my 200tw tires on, but the Magna rear diffs sure give it a more balanced feel than the Haldex in the previous generation.

I’ll get a better intercooler in it and wait for Cobb to get the AP Tuner working so I can stick with EQT. Unless APR gets their at home tuning working, then I may try them out.

The only people suggesting anything other than the CTR are those that haven't driven/owned one. There is nothing, and I mean nothing that touches it in its class.

If you're deadset on the Golf, I'd wait until they fix the infotainment next year. The 22 and 23s will be extremely undesirable from a resale perspective once that is fixed next model year.

Ya I was going to buy a mk8 GTI but I’ve been reading the FB groups and forums and it’s plagued with electrical gremlins

Yea I’ve been hearing great things about the Magna diff, it’s eliminated a lot of the under steer

MK 8 Golf R Looks so good with Oettinger aftermarket parts. But, I will also say that the fl5 is also visually pleasing inside and out.

That looks pretty bad, with non-functional suspension and terrible front fascia/lights.

This is what anyone who has actually driven both would be saying.

And as far as long term values go, right now we are just getting out of a goofy time for car value retention. When that finished crashing down, the Type R would still hold its value (it did so very well even before Covid) and as every other VW, on a long enough timeline the value for the Golf will be $0

Do you enjoy being wrong? The R and R32 (outside of the DSG only Mk5) are among the best of any non exotic. In 2020 when both cars were out of production, Rs were up quite a bit more than CTRs. Now that they’re both in the next generation, the previous R is still holding closer to original pricing than the CTR. Doesn’t help that the old CTR had awful cooling, low tuning potential and a refresh to try to fix the cooling that didn’t really help.

I’ve driven both on road and on track and unless you were just committed to tracking in a stock class (in a cooler climate) and doing very little daily driving, I wouldn’t pick the CTR over the old R and certainly not over the new one.

I can agree with you on some points Schn3ll , but the 2004 VW .:R32 seems to be holding value, especially if you can find one with low miles. With only 5,000 units brought to the US, I believe that it will end up being a collectors item.

CTR. Felt like the better driving car to me. You forget about the way it looks the longer you drive it….well, until some ricer or some POS 4.6 new edge keeps following you to provoke a race.
