Follow up on durability of 22 inch wheels

When we bought our LCI the finance guy was quite worried that the 22 inch wheels would be damaged the first pothole we hit. Wanted to sell us the wheel insurance. I passed on it. On a recent trip to Colorado we hit several potholes along Trail Ridge Road with a pretty full load. One rattled all of our teeth and I was sure that I messed up a wheel.

I looked them all over and they look fine. I was worried about the alignment so I took it in today. The alignment was quite off, certainly in part to the "alignment holes" I found in CO. Wheels are just fine. They can take some abuse and not get damaged.

Thought I'd share as there was a question the other day on this subject.

I am running a 285/40R22 squared setup.

Looks a lot better. That 0.3 degree left front toe would feather the tire. I prefer zero toe up front, but how it is will help it track straight.

  • How often (in mileage and months) do you perform wheel alignments?
  • Are they been done at BMW dealer ?
  • How much do you pay for it ?

Really would like to see some data from others as well with Staggered (22") set up.

With most of my cars, I get alignments done when I get new tires. In the case of the X7, I decided to get the alignment due to the potholes I hit. The tires don't last long in perfect conditions, I didn't want to take a chance at shortening that time with a bad alignment. I'm at about 13k miles now (like 10k on the tires).

Cost was 180, done at the dealer. I was able to order IAS on mine and I believe the dealership is about the only place that can deal with getting the alignment setup for the rear steering.

I regularly perform tire rotations & alignments (atleast every 8K miles) on my other cars, usually at the dealerships. While looking at the before and after settings chart, some numbers are always corrected after the alignment. I usually get at least 50K out of most of my tires.

I was wondering (since you don't do it in regular intervals) if you experience any steering wheel pulls to sides in X7 (worse case: when there is uneven wear on the front wheels) ?

I have not experienced any steering wheel pull. I haven't seen any abnormal wear on the tires.

I’ve clobbered many teeth chattering potholes here in PA over the last 2 years with the 22” staggered setup, and haven’t had any issues with the wheels or alignment but I did replace one tire early on under warranty due to a bubble. Tire wear is still even at ~18k miles. I recommend the wheel and tire warranty though as it will easily pay for itself with a few tires, particularly with the cost of the 22” rubber these days.
