X7 M50i Speedo Issue - Need quick advice

Need some quick help if possible. Took the X7 in for glass replacement (windshield cracked during delivery in showroom). I asked them to check speedo as it was overstating speed (40 on radar is 44 on speedo).

Today they told me car is "ready" and no problems with speedo because accuracy is "within 10% and therefore within specs."

I'm not happy about a 110K car that can't tell me my speed with better accuracy than 10%. Additionally, they gave me a loaner X7 which consistently reads only 3% over which I can certainly live with.

I keep hearing this is a coding issue. Can anyone give me some sage counsel on this issue? What are my options - where are the pressure points/buttons to push to get this resolved.

Thanks everyone

You may get help from coding but I have the same on my X6M. I kind of like it as effectively I always drive 3-4 mph slower than I think I do. The difference is always one way.

I got the same answer. Within 10% +2.4mph.

Crazy.

Is it weird that I like that it overstates the speed? That way I can pretend I'm getting away with speeding. Of course, I'm also deathly afraid of getting pulled over. Mostly because of the dismembered body in the spare tire storage space.

I have got to remember to dump that thing in the lake one of these days.

All car manufactures do this for liability reasons. They don't want to get sued for the car going faster than indicated so they have a built in error in the speedo. You can thank the litigious nature of the US for that. However, it should be able to be coded out (but I don't know how on the G-series cars).

Thanks everyone - maybe I'm weird but I like to know the truth and adjust my speed accordingly without having to drive a luxury "SAV" which makes me do the math. The M50i is a performance machine - part of "performance" is accuracy and consistency.

The most often checked numerical value on a car is the speedo - 10% is way over the top. Not sure how to explain why the loaner X7 is so much more accurate. I'm gonna escalate this to BMW USA and see if I can't get either a speedo or an explanation I can live with.

Damn car comes with a g force meter, turbo pressure indicator etc etc but cant give me an accurate measure of speed??? Ridiculous & frustrating.

FWIW I use Waze which calculates your speed using GPS and our X7 was off by +5 mph (X7-75, Waze-70) when we first took delivery back in March. After the last software update two months ago it's now off only by +1 mph, at least according to Waze.

Thanks LittleJoe - that sounds promising! Can you identify the update for me so that I can check it against mine? I just purchased mine 10 days ago.

I'm at version 07/2019.55 but would think your X7 has a newer version installed.

Confirmed, same issue happened to me and after software updated it's now off only by +1 or +2 mph versus Escort Max 360c.

Here is an old article I found on the M3/M4 forums that provides more insight on this topic:

https://www.thrillist.com/cars/your-...-japanese-cars

FWIW, I have found the error on my '17 M3 to be 1-2 MPH off at the most (and never decided to code it). But my '05 M3 speedo was off by a significant margin so I coded out the error. It is not surprising that BMW will have different amount of induced speed "errors" for different vehicles on purpose while still maintaining some minimum margin.

I posted the letter BMW gave me about the speedo issues on the other speedometer thread. It states that the margin is built in for differences in wheel sizes, tire pressures, etc. so that the speedo never displays a speed under the actual speed.

Ok, I get that. But 10% + 2.4 mph means that at 75 mph, my indicated speed COULD be 84.9. Or not. It's a guessing game.

I think 10% is an over exaggeration. I have three BMWs in a row and the most I've had with the 20 or 21 stock summer tires and non-stock 19 winter tires is 3-4 mph difference.

My installed remote software upgrade version is 07/2019.63. Search for upgrades comes back negative and speedo still reading +5 at all speeds from 40 thru 70. All speeds checked and verified against against two independent stationary radar units. Waze also confirms. Bite me Bavaria!!

Time to start thinking about a coding modification since service dept at “stealership” was of no help whatsoever. They have “a bulletin” which indicates this is within specs.

Waiting on BimmerCode to get rid of this unwelcome and intentional overage. I checked a few months back and will prob reach out again.

Hi,it is not possible to code the instrument cluster in the X7 with BimmerCode at the moment.
