I had the same question, We havent bought an X7 yet, but we will be trading the X5 in probably in a year or two.
I always felt our 3.5 X5 had plenty of power, especially after the performance package upgrade, then I bought a G12 750 and it was WOW. My 7 was in for service that they didnt complete so I had an X7 50 as a loaner for two days. I had driven the 40 before and thought it was just fine, and a tune would make it better. But after driving the 50 for two days I feel like the X7 is just a different animal with it. I would say if you plan on getting the 40, dont drive the 50, it will spoil you, I know now after having my 750 and now driving the X7 50 I wont be able to by the 40. As for the ride, I think it rides really well, I had the MSport as a loaner and it rode great, soft enough but very flat in handling. I actually felt like the ride was better than my 750 M sport. Its really quiet although you hear a nice exhaust note when you floor it. As others have said you can turn that down, but its pretty quiet just cruising.

I just took delivery of my X7 xDrive50i this week. It's a 2019 CPO with 8,000k miles, so not an M50i, but driving the I6 and V8 back to back made it very hard to want to save some money with the 40i. The highway on-ramp helped me make my decision. The acceleration with the V8 make you feel like you're in a vehicle that weighs 1000 lbs less. I6 drove great around town, but the extra power was impossible to pass up.

I'm coming from a Mercedes GLS550 and 40i felt underpowered especially from 60MPH to 85 MPH, typical pickup band needed for overtaking left lane huggers. I drove the M50i and was really impressed with its handling and power. Ordered one!

If the x7 drives anything similar to a 7, then the 40 will give you more than expected for road trips and spirited daily driving, but will leave you wanting more when you decide to drive to put the pedal to the metal Last edited by mpop302; 11-17-2019 at 05:55 AM.. |
