MLB FA is nothing like NBA where big contracts seems to be given out to almost anyone, seems like MLB is a little harder to land a big contract.

If you think if it from a business standpoint, Harper will be worth the 10 or 11/300-350MM contract. He's the most marketable player in MLB; he's box office material. They money he's going to generate (in Phila?) from merchandise/ticket sales/TV viewership will easily offset the 30MM per year that he (and his agent) take home. Harper is no Mike Trout, everyone will agree, but he will be a revenue machine for years to come.

That sounds like the rationalization for the Pujols contract. 10-11 years is a long time. He's definitely got marketability now, but no guarantees he will have it over the back 1/2 of the contract. Plus with these opt out clauses that have become popular, club takes all risk and player keeps upside, so if he is still marketable in 5 years an opt out will force them to pay more to keep him. Good for him but wouldn't really want my team (Red Sox) to sign that kind of contract for him or anyone else, including Betts.

I agree those contracts never payoff and your taking a risk of any unforeseen injury, yes there is insurance but not worth it.

I heard Kimbrel might sit out the season. I seriously doubt that. His $100m demands are insane.

His agent denied it. Not sure how it would help him. I think he would be better off signing a one year deal with whatever team pays him the most, have a strong season and try again next year. He was shaky towards the end of this past season. Taking a year off won't help him get more money in a year when he is another year older. Agree his initial demands were ridiculous.

$100m, 6 years, no way. I don’t understand how you rather be on a bad team for 6 months, and no your season is over before it starts. I’d rather play on a competitive team, and enjoy the 6 months of the season, and have a opportunity to play in the World Series. Work out a deal with Boston. And that’s coming from a Yankee fan who would
love to see Kimbrel far away from the America league. Just for the first half of the season.

I think he has a better chance getting a better one-year deal in Atlanta or Philly than Boston. I think Boston has decided to move on from him. But you never know.

Philly is willing to spend, however, I think David Robertson is their closer. Atlanta I could see. It’s just greed.

The Yankee rotation is fragile but they do have some promising young arms in the minors. They are being ‘cheap’ as Cashman mentioned nobody has accepted a minor league deal.

Harper gets $330M over 13 years. That's a really long commitment but I actually like the deal better for the Phillies than the Machado deal for the Padres. Lower annual value and no re-negotiating in a few years if he plays really well since there is no opt out. (Plus I wouldn't want Machado...)

Philly will be a force in the NL East, no doubt about it.

Wanted to follow up about the Aaron Hicks signing:

Not a sexy player, however, you won’t find a above average defensive center fielder with power for $10M a year. Overall, not a good but a great signing.

"Only" $25M per year allows flexibility for future FAs. Ownership has their eye on a certain center fielder on the west coast who may become available after '20 season.

I don’t know who they have coming up through the minors but Philly may want to invest (FA or trade) in additional SP before investing $50M - $60M a year in 2 outfield spots. Nola was great last year but Arrieta’s best days are behind him. Who else do they have for SP?

In 2008 when they won the WS, they had Cole Hamels and not much more as far as starting pitching goes. What they did have was a line-up that mashed and a strong bullpen. The currently constructed team seems to mirror that '08 team. It looks good on paper, at least.
