Camera malfunction

When I reversed the vehicle the camera screen went blank and got a camera malfunction error message
I drive for a few miles and parked and switched the engine off
Restarted and put it on reverse and magically camera function came back

What went wrong ? Anyone else experiencing this ? Software or hardware issue ?
Should I take it to the dealer ?
Just worried if this will happen again ?

Thanks again

Just a thought - check to see if your cameras are obstructed by dirt or bug splat.

I had the HUD go out with a similar message. Their resolution path was to first try a software update, then went straight to replacing everything when that didnt fix anything. I'd imagine they'd do the same here, they don't troubleshoot the technology components too in depth.

We’ve had this. At first, it happened only intermittently enough to be a nuisance but not really a problem, but here lately it is happening more frequently, so we have an appointment with our dealer coming up, to have it checked out. At first, I thought it was a software glitch, so I asked them to update the iDrive, but that didn’t fix it. They asked us to make an appointment, I guess because they think it could take awhile, and they are trying to secure us a loaner. Will update after we get it back. This thing is too much of a behemoth to not be able to rely on its camera system, not to mention how much we are paying for them!

I think there is a recall for this. I was contacted by my dealer about scheduling the recall work and I started looking to see what recall is active. I found that there is a software update to fix problems with the backup camera malfunctioning.

There is a recall for what sounds like this exact problem. Check to see if you have an affected vehicle. Don’t have the BMW ID number associated with the issue but 19V684 is the NHTSA recall number.

Just had this repaired, myself, in our X5. No issue yet in x7

The recall lists august 2018 or so build date x7s, so must be some pre production models OR it’s a typo of some kind and they meant august 2019

If there is an official open BMW recall, you can go to this BMW site to verify by typing in your VIN. Here: https://www.bmwusa.com/safety-and-emission-recalls.html

Additionally, if you are the first time owner of a BMW with a recall using BMW Financial Services to lease/finance your BMW (which means BMW has your current address on file), you should also get a letter from your dealer and/or BMW NA about the recall. Unfortunately, my experience has been that BMW is not always as prompt as they could be with keeping their recall database updated. Which means you could hear of a recall that could be applicable to your vehicle via the interweb (like above), but the database may not be updated for a while. Either way, all you can do is wait since the dealers won't take any recall action unless your VIN is in the BMW database.

it's funny, i'm proactive about keeping up with recalls like you, but as a result i'm often aware of the recall before the remedy is available. better to know early than late, though

Interestingly I had this issue yesterday where the camera just turned off while reversing.

I checked BMW recall site as well and my VIN does not show any recalls.

I’ll also add that I recently had my vehicle software updated and didn’t have this issue prior. With that said, it could just be a coinqidink.

That recall was about newer models letting the user opt to not automatically go to the backup camera on-reverse, not a malfunction. It was more of a feature so a user could opt for it to remember the last used setting to go to the overhead cameras on reverse instead... NHTSA didn't like that feature so it's a "recall"

Yup, there is. It’s a software fix. Mine has always worked fine but my car is currently in the shop and will get a software update. Crossing my fingers that this update won’t cause any new issues ...

You can go to the bmw site and find recalls using your VIN.

I’ve had it also. It always works again when I restart the car. The software update didn’t fix this; it’s happened since then.

I did check with my dealer - they said if the car needs a recall for this issues we will be notified
my software was UTD and nothing needed to be done per dealer

Then I guess it may due to some software issue related to the multi-camera integration. I am wondering if other cases are with parking assistance or not.

It seems that similar issues also happened on X5 and X6. Looks like a very common issue on recent models. My 2015 F10 has 360-degree camera while never had issues.

Took our June build 2019 in today for this issue—the second time in 2 weeks we have had it in—and the SA told us that the culprit is actually a heater in the windshield that keeps one of the cameras from fogging, that is malfunctioning, and that the entire windshield would need to be replaced! 😳

This is second-hand information from missus, and it doesn’t entirely make sense to me that the windshield needs to be replaced when I would think that it would be a rear camera that would be affected, but whatevs.
