Push button start??

Do the 2006 3 series have problems with the push button start? Yesterday the car wouldnt turn on (no cranking). I replaced the battery which needed replacing and it started right up. Little later it did not want to start, no cranking or anything. Im hoping its as simple as the push button, at the shop now. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

There's a TSB out for the cable going from the battery to the fuse box in the glove compartment to be faulty.

needs reprograming

im pretty posititve that the new battery needs to be programmed so that the car can recognize that it has a full charge and then calculate usage. if not reprogrammed then car wont start again.

I'm pretty sure that is not true. TRUE: With a new battery you should register it in the car for optimal life/performance. I have never heard that the car won't start if that is not done. Lots of people have not registered their new bateries without any problems...at least as far as the car starting.

I had similar problems a while back. Ended up being the starter. Had to replace it. Hopefully it is just a bad connection or defective cable.

I believe there have been threads where new batteries have actually exploded due to no registration.

It was about a year or so ago and I made a mental note to remember registering a battery if I needed to get mine replaced, and no, I wasn't happy about it either.

could you unlock your car with FOB? if so then loose wire in fuse box would apply as people who have that issue their entire car died.

Try using your other FOB to eliminate your key being dead, also try jumping it and recheck your battery connections. If all that checks out then its most likely your starter.

Now that the car is at the shop, the damn thing is starting just fine. The mechanic has started it.up every half hour or so without a problem. He asked me to leave it a little longer so he can look further into it. Wtf!

sounds more like a loose battery connection or the fuse box things as both happen sporadically

Just got the car back. The mechanic said he could not find anything, no codes, etc. I guess the car had to reprogram with the new battery or something. Day 1, so far so good.

that was ever linked to an unregistered battery, they never found out what caused it

One of the cars burned up entirely (not kidding).

Another had damage in the trunk area.

Do a forum search for "battery registration" and you'll see plenty of threads and one thread with the pics of the burning BMW....

In reading some of those threads, it sounds like you can get odd electrical errors throughout the car after a battery swap w/o registration, especially if the battery type or capacity changed.

1) The registering the battery just sets up a different charging profile.
2) It would not explode by not being registered. It would charge less due to the car thinking the age of the battery and couldn't handle a full charge. What the above is referring to would be the opposite.. maybe putting an old battery into a car that had a fresh registration?
3) A lot of times people get in their cars and just plain don't seat the FOB enough. It will do what you described. Next time maybe check to see if everything else is ok? Radio worked etc.... like said before, did it unlock the doors?
Having the battery not registered would do nothing at all to affect what you are describing...

According to both BMW and Mike Miller, it's not quite that simple. Registering the new battery integrates it into the system and informs the IBS which then properly controls charging rates - perhaps higher, perhaps lower.

You are putting your foot on the brake when pushing the button right? Just want to get that out of the way.

Of coarse. Now with the new battery everything is fine. Put everything back together and the car starts up better than ever! Amazing the problems a bad battery caused.
