Just as my car is about to arrive...

I read this in today's Telegraph - "BMW's entire 3-series range will come equipped with an EfficientDymanics system from September. BMW says the technology improves fuel consumption by up to 24 per cent, while CO2 emissions drop by up to 19 per cent. The programme includes high-precision direct injection, auto stop-start and brake energy regeneration.".

You guys that are expectiing delivery in Sept could well luck out.

This technology is already in the new 1 series and the E92 2 Litre petrol and diesels isn't it?

Don't be too glum. It'll be from September build most likely.

Also the direct injection probably only means that the DI petrol engines from the E92/93 are getting put into the E90/91. I hope it means they've sorted the fuel pump issues

So really all you are missing if you have a diesel on order is the brake energy regeneration which is said to be something like a 3% economy improvement, the auto stop-start and perhaps stuff like the kidney grill flaps if they go down the route of the 1/5 series.

I'd guess that it'll be the E90/91 only that will basically get the efficient dynamics from the 1/5 series and the DI petrol engines from the E92/93. I expect that the E92/93 will get the effiecient dynamics stuff a bit later (but that's just my guess)

Sadly the BMW production updates clash horribly with the UK plate change (Sept/March) so if you're going for a new plate you can get caught out.

Hmmm - yes its one of those things I guess. You pay your money and take your chances. To be honest, I don't think I would enable the automatic stop/start feature though.

You will always be in line to miss out on something.

The direct injection upgrade has been rumoured for a year now. It will increase the HP of the 330i saloon, but probably not the coupe.

I don't want one of the early automatic stop start cars. They WILL break. I guarantee it.

My 325i is a manual, but not a four cylinder. Does this mean you need to have a manual, 4 cylinder and diesel car (all in the same car )? So 6 cylinder engined cars won't have it?

Maybe I have just had too many bottles... I mean glasses of wine.

Hmmm. So in quick summary:
  • All models get brake energy regeneration.
  • Petrol engines get direct injection.
  • Four cylinder diesel engines get particulate filters.
  • Manual gearbox cars get gear shift indicator.
  • Four cylinder engines get start-stop (318/320 i/d).
  • Electric Power Steering and Active Aero (kidney flaps) on all except 35i/d
Looking at the changes to particular models the six cylinder diesels have the lowest number of changes. The biggest changes are to the four cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

Gear shift indicator? Surely that can be switched off.

I would guess on beauforty's car it would be lit all the time

i feel so gutted!

please tell me its possible to get the new upgrades!
i just knew this was coming as i saw the 1 series having these new tweaks,
and at the time of my order there was no info given to me by the dealer.

if my car is due in september, would it wise to call the dealer to see if they can change to get this new engine?
has anyone ever done this or even know if its possible.
it would be great to have 143hp on my 318d, big jump from my 105hp astra 1.6

please can someone tell i can do this or even better i am or would be eligble for this upgraded engine. i don't mind waiting.
(im sounding like a kid, but can't help it)

Surely these changes are for the new model year (2008), which starts in October and will come with a 2~3% price increase?

No harm in calling the dealer to see what they say. It just might be possible, but I think as mentioned above, these changes could be for September build cars.

I can't believe that the 118d now costs just £35 a year to tax! That is incredible.

If that's true then they are going to do some more tweaks to the car as it currently has a CO2 figure of 123 g/km putting it into band C (just). Also the combined fuel figure would be up from 60.1mpg to 62.8mpg according to the article.

This is very impressive stuff from BMW that goes largely unreported in the open press. I see that the figures for the 335d show a big improvement;
output 286bhp (same); combined mpg 42.2 (up 12%); emissions 177g/km (down 12% and a reduction in VED banding to Band E).

I know full well that my car, which is going to build as we speak, will not have these improvements but you have to draw the line somewhere and order a car, else you would never do it waiting for the continuous improvements to the engine and dynamics. I will just console myself with the thought that in three years time when I come to change the 335d will have gone through a metamorphosis and will be a tri-turbo, wind power assisted, 4 litre beast, pumping out 380bhp and returning 65mpg in the combined cycle and be in the lowest VED band!

Oh, and as a postscript, I see that the improvements have dropped the 335i into Band F VED which has to be a good thing!

very good stuff, but we knew about efficient dymanics for some time now, I wish they applied it to the 335i sooner

i think it gets the brake energy thing - this brings down "pollution" to 218 g co2/km (by 6) the current 335i is of course 228 - if it were 3 grams lower i would be saving 200 notes a year on tax (band G to band F)

This doesn't concern me too much, what i am worried about is residuals - that my 41k 1 month old car is going to lose money faster

wonder if we can retrofit the alternator thing i suppose we would need to get the car inspected too!!!

seems like quite a big advancement and would probably hurt my resale if i dont wait for this as my 335i is going to be delivered in September

what week number is it for the 2008 model productions as i might as well hold out for it if the dealer is willling, i know i could be waiting forever as things constantly improve but i believe this is worth the wait???

I think it would seriously p&^s off my dealer if I said I wanted to cancel my order and wait until the new engine models are available! Might be worth a bit of dealer baiting though!

I think its worth waiting for the new engine (if you can). The way this government likes to tax the motorist, band G will be a £1000 per year before you know it.

my 325d motorsport e90 auto

I ordered a e90 325 d last week and i discussed at great length 2.0d or 2.5d and not one word of new engine being fitted in sept to the 2.0d ,I will be having a talk with my dealer tomorrow am . is the 2500 extra now worth spending to gain 20bhp and a chrome grill /exhaust trim as i understand it the new 177 bhp engine comes with a diesel particulate filter as standard like the 6 cylinder diesel engines .I also dont mind cancelling my car and going else where as i think he was just after a sale and nothing more (salesman a friend ?) what concerns me is in 2/3 years down the line will there be a market for a 325 when i change as the 320 is now so similar is the 325 a waste of money over the 320 please fell free to comment all advise welcome thanks Paul
