M50D - Cloud of smoke

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Interested in whether other M50D owners have any experience of the car sending out a cloud of blue smoke from the exhaust - sometimes - the instant I hit the accelerator. This can still happen well into a journey when the engine is warmed up properly. Generally it would happen when I accelerate vigorously, but not necessarily kickdown - there's usually enough torque that its not needed.

Disclosure - This is my first diesel so this could be completely normal behaviour, but it is quite disconcerting. I feel bad for the driver behind when I decide to dump the throttle and its like 007 just hit the smoke button :-)

Never saw anything like that.

I have also X5(F15) x30d, no smoke whatsoever even after all these years. (it's not that powerfull car as X7 M50d though)

EDIT: I've had to look it up. Do you mean something like this?

If it is smoke it is burning oil, if it is steam then coolant is getting into the engine.

Yeah, it’s similar to that video although maybe not quite as bad. Tried it today in comfort mode - same result. Parked and tried in neutral - similar result but not so bad.

It’s somewhat blue - so I’d say it was oil rather than anything else.

Any other M50d owners confirm that they never see smoke?

Resurrecting this thread since my X7 has been at the dealer now for 3 weeks. They have taken the engine out to find out what the problem is. (Did you know the engine has to be dropped out of the bottom of the car - not raised on a normal hoist? - so my SA told me anyway). Apparently the trouble is most likely the turbos which will possibly be repairable or perhaps need replacing. Ive been told to wait at least another month before I am likely to get it back. :-(

They told me its also a known problem - a few of the M50D's here had to go back for similar or worse repairs.

Not had this problem after 10 months of ownership?
I'm assuming its quite noticeable when looking out of your rear view mirror as I tend not to go to the rear of the SUV after start up?

I'll definitely test this claim for myself. I wouldn't be happy if my precious M50d won't last long (almost about two years now). So far, I have no issues regards engine or other mechanical parts (except fuel cap sticking), more like software things - e.g. AndroidAuto in X7 is steaming pile, even in compare to retrofited MMI in F15.

Btw: I would definitely ask for replacement of the turbos, rather than repairing it.

Yeah - Im still waiting to see what they come back with. If you have this issue, you won't miss it. After changing gear, you engulf the car behind in a big cloud of smoke. Apparently if its black smoke then its liked to whether or not you use AdBlue, but white smoke is more serious...
