5th Cylinder Misfire

Hi all!

I'm new to the board, I'm sort of a beginner when it comes to troubleshooting car failures and I'm hoping I can get some feedback from someone more experienced.

Currently I have a '15 F82, has DPs and BM3 E85 tune by F80Paul. Flashed the car about a month ago, I loved the way it drove!

This past Monday I was on my way to work and suddenly the exhaust tone changed and drivetrain malfunction popped up. Car started feeling jerky and unresponsive. I then scanned it and found the misfire in cylinder 5. Fast forward to today, I've changed and gapped all plugs to .019-.021, the misfire still continue. I then went and replaced the coils for both cylinder 5 and 6 (just in case). I started the car and there's still a code. After resetting dme and erasing code multiple times after driving, it still there.

I'm also noticing a strong odor coming from exhaust with a bit of white smoke, strong ethanol smell. I'm thinking of running the E85 low, put a gas cleaner in tank and fill it with 93 oct. hopefully this helps. Maybe it's an injector being faulty? But I figured it would give me a code, which it isn't.

Please help

Thank you,

-Oscar

It could be the injector failing.... When i got white smoke out of my car it ended up being an internal leak of the Top Mount inter cooler. you should check the Reservoir which is right above the inter cooler. Let me know how you make out Best of luck.

Just an aside. Ask Paul, but for E85, shouldnt the plugs be gapped down to closer to .018?

Should reservoir be dry? I just checked and saw oil like substance. Sorry if it's a silly question but like I mentioned I'm not too familiarized with this. Thank you again

The Reservoir should "NOT" be dry. it should have coolant in it and should be filled to the correct line on the yellow measurement piece inside. Sounds like you are ok there which you should be relieved about as it means you don't have an internal leak going into your exhaust manifold and causing havoc in your engine. keep an eye on how much is in there. if its very low and you refill but it goes down again. take the car to BMW ASAP. The next thing is it can be a bad injector or a coil???

Also after driving your car and see if the intercooler is cold to the touch.

Thank you!

Just got back from dealership, although bm3 was giving me misfire in cylinder 5. Their diagnostics showed faulty fuel injectors for cylinder 5 & 6. Thankfully that was the only code that was showing. My baby is staying immobile for a week, it should be done by next Friday

Per BM3:
When tuning your BMW S55 it is recommended to go with 1-step colder spark plugs. We've found the NGK SILZKBR8D8S (97506) working great when gapped to appropriate spec. If you'll be running less than 30psi of boost we suggest a 0.022-0.023" gap. We've gone to 0.018" on some cars with 30+psi but in most cases that isn't needed and will cause rough idle in some cases. In most cases though we just go with the 0.022-0.023" gap and call it a day.

Yes. It's based on the boost not fuel type.
