Why are you guys paying so much?

Paying almost what the car cost new for a 4-5 year old car. Wouldn't it make more sense to pay the extra $15k and a get a brand new M2 when they are out?

If you haven't noticed, the entire car market is like that right now.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some hefty markup on the new M2 when it comes out.

Of course I have. But these are particularly nuts. I haven’t see any other 4-5 year old cars selling for close to new price or even over

You haven't been looking very hard. The Pcar market is nuts right now and many other cars, particularly sports cars, are selling for a percent premium over the already inflated market.

I was offered sticker MSRP for a 2020 Miata I've owned for 2 years by an online dealer.

The times are rough.

What other cars are selling for crazy prices?

Yea this is crazy. Some of these are going for close to sticker but they are 4 years old. If it's a collector model sure. But if it will drop a lot in the next 1-2 years when we start seeing more cars and the new m2 is out then forget it.

I think it all depends on what you really want in a car. I can't speak to the entire car market, but for the M2 market I've heard a lot of current owners say they would never swap their F87 for a new M2. As an F87 owner, I completely agree. I would never consider trading mine for a new one. Looks are subjective, but I really dislike the new G series M240 and I don't anticipate being thrilled with the looks of the new M2. I'm also not interested in a car that's heavier than what I currently have. More power is great, but if I want to chase power I'm going to ditch my N55. I guess we're all willing to pay premium if a car delivers on what we're seeking.

This is pretty much my exact feeling on my recent purchase of a '20 M2C about a month ago. Hell, I hadn't even driven an M2 or M2C or even any BMW before I purchased this car on the other side of the country that I had never seen in person and had shipped to me. But, I knew that a M2C w/ a manual transmission is a rapidly dying breed, incredibly well regarded and consistently raved about among its automotive peers. I had seen several M240s in person, and while everybody likes to say "we don't know what they'll do with the new M2 yet..." the new proportions and design language do not speak to me AT ALL. Yes, the new cars are faster. Awesome. But I like to enjoy looking at my cars.

Plus, interest rates are not going any lower, and the longer I waited, those low-mileage, practically new examples are gaining miles, even if slowly. My 2020 had only 3100 miles when it came to me. That's worth the extra ticket price in my book.

There are a lot of people who will be waiting 2-3 years from order date for a Porsche 911 or 718 (for example)... These people want a great sports car to drive while they wait. M2 and M2C are great options.

Same reason why you see certified pre-owned 2022 Porsches with 90+ km on them for $350,000. People will pay double to have those cars right now.

Check out the market for stainless steel Rolex watches. Same deal, except it was already wild before the "pandemic".
You can pay $10-60K for a pre-owned one right now, or wait years and pay $7,000 - $15,000 CAD for brand new models.

I benefited from the crazy market and got ~$7.5k more for my Supra than I paid. I was going to get a new M240i, but I found a 2019 M2C with just above 1,600 miles on that had about $3.5k of PPF/ceramic coating/ceramic tint on it in the color I wanted so it wasn't a financially bad idea.

I really like the M240i, but I'm happier in the M2C. I didn't want to wait for a '23 as I'll be commuting again soon and why give up a year of joy waiting? I feel good about my decision.

I think the M2C, even at near-MSRP prices for a used model still presents decent value in today's nuts car market.

Many of the people who want/buy an M2C would agree that the next logical step up from an M2C would have to be a 911/718 or a C8, and all 3 of those are even worse in terms of pricing.

So you can:
1) Yolo, bite the bullet and pay higher prices for an M2C and sell your current car at an also absurdly high price to make up for some of the high costs
2) Decide to wait, complain all the time, and keep driving the Golf R (or at least that was my choice) while praying for prices to fall.
3) Bargain hunt for some other car that is good value even now. Like maybe a manual trans Aston or Viper or something that is just starting its rise in market value? Idk - I'm terrible at speculation

Vipers just starting to appreciate? They have been bringing crazy prices for the last few years. The ACR extreme's are bringing double MSRP!

Or you could buy a Breitling that costs less, looks better, works the same now.

everything has gone up.

fwiw i sold my 2015 M3 with 33k miles and 6MT for 52k over the summer (72k msrp)
picking up a 2019 M2C with 25k miles dct for 58k this week. (68k msrp)

to me it seems reasonable given the crazy market. it only hurts if you are financing the entire thing at the crazy interest rates.

and some of us don't want the new car. I drove a supra with the ZF8 and it was terrible. the g8x cars aren't much better. asking for a random low rpm downshift coming to a light and the whole car lurches forward... terrible. DCT is worlds better than any auto for the enthusiast who drives in manual mode everywhere.

Hope you all realize that there are certain bmw dealerships that are not allowed to charge markup for new vehicles, so please search around. My manual m4 was delivered january at msrp.

New M2's typically all sold at MSRP even pre-Covid so buying one again at sticker means you avoid the market issues that we are currently seeing (that is changing slowly). Buying used means you are joining in on it and accept that it will drop over the next year (when G87 comes out) and again the year after (when supplies correct). If you sold your car at a premium then you are just transferring the "profit" so it's an even swap but for me,, I couldn't knowingly over pay. Pre-Covid, you could get an M3 (the beautiful F80 that is currently seeking low miles for $60k+) for 10% off before incentives. We will be there again.

My friend... nothing is further from the truth... the only thing the M2 had going for it from a price perspective is the fact that it was rarer... outside of that, they were selling below MSRP everywhere... in mid 2019... i had to call only 2 dealers to find below MSRP locally and this was in the hot South Florida market.

There were a few things when I spoke to a salesperson... he said the fact that the M2 is so small and only 2 door already removes a lot of buyers... There are so many dealers where the comps just sat and sat waiting for a buyer... South BMW in Miami had 10 at one point... that's not a joke, I have a picture of it somewhere on their back lot. if you paid MSRP back then, then that was a clownish move back then just like paying over 60K for one now is...

I paid 60K for my 66k MSRP car in 2019 and sold it earlier this year in a trade for 60K... couldn't even fathom paying that for this car now. If this was a non covid market, these cars would be worth mid 40s max... as already iin 2019 I could find a comp for 53-54... to me the 6k delta was just worth a new M car.
