GLS Video Review in Italian.
It’s a very conservative looking design compared to the X7.The rear looks very bland and the side profile looks awkward.Definitely not liking the new design. The X7 looks way better. Last edited by SW19; 04-17-2019 at 11:26 AM.. |

While certainly not as aggressive looking as the X7, I think it's a very nice looking design and MB will sell lots of them. Out of the gate, MBUX is more intelligent than iDrive 7 but BMW will likely continue improving iDrive 7 with OTA updates, at least that's what I'll tell myself.

I see many similarities to the X7. Just a modification of the heated and cooled cupholders. Seat mechanisms very similar. Looks like both the GLS and the X7 are going to take a half hour to move the motorized 2nd row and get into the back.

It's not that bad and most enjoy watching the 2nd row fold up which gives them time to figure out how they want to climb back there.

I noticed that as well, they said it was quite a bit longer than outgoing GLS. As LittleJoe mentioned the MBUX does not have a dash overhang, I would think glare could be an issue on all that glass. I also think it looks like an afterthought and not well integrated. 23 inch wheels on the 580 - thats some big rubber bands. No laser lights.

I personally like the styling of the GLS - only problem is there's a huge difference between the GLS with the AMG styling/package and the base. Obviously the AMG version is the one that I like and it's also $$$$. I'm cross shopping the X5 with X7 and the GLE vs GLS. The GLE vs X5 is about 3k more comparably equiped. I'm guessing it will be about that or more if you compare the X7 with a comp GLS.

I just ordered an X7 a few weeks ago. I was initially considering a GLE450 with the third row, but was pretty underwhelmed on the test drive with the engine and the lack of trunk space even with the third row down. The X740 was much more responsive than the GLE450 even with being a much larger vehicle. I would imagine the GLS450 will be even worse.
The digital panel does look better in person, but BMW dash does have a much better appearance in my opinion. I do like the styling of both and would be happy with either, but would probably have to go with the GLS550 whereas I will be perfectly happy with the X740. |

GLS 580 powertrain
Here's a description of the initial V8 offering for the GLS:
"Shortly after the model series launch, the introduction of the GLS 580 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 10.0-9.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 229-224 g/km) will mark the world premiere of a new, electrified V8 petrol engine with 48-volt on-board electrical system and integrated starter-generator. It has an output of 360 kW (489 hp) and 700 Nm of torque, with a further 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW/22 hp available via EQ Boost over short periods. The integrated starter-generator (ISG) is responsible for hybrid functions such as EQ Boost or energy recuperation, while allowing fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. ISG eliminates the need for a belt drive for ancillary components at the front of the engine, which reduces its overall length. The slim design of the engine, together with the physical separation of intake/exhaust, creates space for close-coupled exhaust aftertreatment. The 48 V on-board electrical system serves not only high power consumers, such as the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, but also the integrated starter-generator (ISG), which also supplies energy to the battery by means of highly efficient energy recuperation." The six-cylinder version of this technology has gotten excellent reviews.

So at least according to Thomas, they are the same length behind the 3rd row. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBxC2Y4vs9w |

GLS interior space
Quote:
The new GLS has a considerably longer wheelbase than its predecessor (3135 mm, an increase of 60 mm). This creates more space, especially in the second seat row, which can furthermore be adjusted fore and aft. Legroom here is increased by 87 mm (3.4 in) when the seats are in their rearmost position, which also makes it easier to get into the vehicle. As standard for the European market, the second row has a 60:40-split folding rear bench seat with adjustable 40:20:40-split backrests. Alternatively it is possible to order the American standard configuration with two luxury individual rear seats with armrests, between which it is possible to access the rearmost seats with ease. This is particularly useful when child seats are fitted in the second seat row. All seats are electrically adjustable as standard. The same applies to the EASY-ENTRY function, which makes it easy to get into and out of the two individual seats in the third row. For this, the seats in the second row move a long way forwards and fold forwards. The seats in the third row are fully fledged seats that are suitable for people up to 1.94 m (6'-4") tall and are heated for the first time. There are also separate USB charging ports here. If the GLS is equipped with the five-zone automatic climate control, the third row has its own zone with climate control vents in the roof. This zone is supplied by its own, electrically powered heater and air conditioner. A push of a button is all that is required to stow away the comfortable seats and make full use of the 2400-litre (84.8 cu ft) boot space in the GLS. The switches on the left and right of the load compartment and on the front of the wheel arches on the front-passenger side in the C-pillar area allow the seats in the rear rows to be folded completely flat. It is also possible to fold down all the seats simultaneously by pressing the "ALL" button. The carpet-trimmed backs of the backrests form part of a flat, practical load area. Another push of a button lowers the boot sill by approx. 50 mm (2 in) to make it easier to load heavy items."

Yes he had the same complaint about the pitch of the 2nd row seat bottom in his GLE review. I spent 3+ hours testing the GLE and didn't find the pitch of the 2nd row to be an issue, so I don't think it will be an issue in the GLS either.
