CarBuzz: This Is What The BMW iNext Will Look Like

This flagship electric SUV is expected to arrive in 2021.

As part of its EV product onslaught, BMW is busy preparing to unleash a new flagship SUV currently known as the iNext to take on the Jaguar iPace. We've already seen prototypes of the iNext being put through their paces, but now BMW is giving us an insight into the manufacturing process of the pre-production prototypes, which are currently being assembled at BMWs Pilot Plant in the heart of the Research & Innovation Center. These will be used for testing and to prepare for series production. When series production of the fully electric iNext starts in 2021, it will run on the same assembly line as combustion-powered vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

"Preparing a fully electric vehicle for series production is an exciting but challenging task. By the time of the official start of production, we will have built as many as 100 prototypes of the BMW iNEXT," said Udo Hanle, head of Production Integration and Pilot Plant. "Until then, the Pilot Plant will use a range of new innovations to streamline and speed up our processes even further. We are also already preparing our first production associates from Plant Dingolfing to work on the new product."

The first few bodies-in-white of the BMW iNEXT are being assembled in the Pilot Plant bodyshop. BMW is utilizing a new technology called rotary bonding that joins aluminium and high-strength steel by using the friction heat generated as a steel element pierces an aluminium part. The heat of the steel part fuses the two components.

After this, the bodies undergo detailed checks by laser radar that identify individual surface characteristics, thus eliminating the need to place measurement points manually. Complete surfaces of body parts are further examined using a high-resolution scanner and this data is then compared to the CAD model of the part. An augmented reality app also speeds up the way bolts in the floor assembly are identified and compared with the CAD model.

that is an ambitious goal (same assembly line for everything) guess I see why they can't have dedicated electric platform, only time well tell if it turns out to be brilliant strategy or committing suicide...

I guess I missed something because I never realized this was going to be a production vehicle. I thought it was only meant to be a concept car.

Well, more a tech flagship - that's how BMW are placing it at this stage, auto driving level 5 class vehicle.
Let's see how it turns out.

Is the chassi build up as a EV from scratch or is it a bread and butter chassi from ICE, as the IX3?

Not sure but it's suppose to be the same dimensions of the X5 so it potentially can be.

Because of the size it should be iX5

Love the direction it's going because this is what BMW needs now.

It will bring big sales

Considering it will cost considerably more than ICE powered X5- I doubt many ppl would buy it.

Just look how poor the Audi E-tron is selling.

This is built on CLAR-WE, so it is not sitting on a pure electric architecture. It is an evolution of the CLAR platform that underpins the majority of BMW's current lineup.

Since it's a flagship, I think iX8 would be better, but The X8 moniker is apparently being reserved for an upcoming ICE product (that could conceivably spawn its own electric variant). The i6 name has come up as a possibility in media reports, and it is available since the 6 Series name is only being used by the 6GT right now, and that will not live past the end of the generation. However, it would obfuscate things a bit, because this is an SUV and should have an "X" in its name. Yet the iX6 name would normally be reserved for an electric version of the X6, which this vehicle clearly is not. So it's unclear right now where they'll go with the final name.

Why do automakers keep trying to tease us with pics of their camouflaged new cars? There's nothing to see here. Same with the camouflaged 2 series and every other car that has done it. Jesus christ stop with the teasers and just wait for Frankfurt.

There is couple reason for that.

1- it gives people idea what is coming in near future so they don't shop somewhere else.
Like the guy mentioned above: didn't know this car exists, this way they will wait knowing what is coming.

2- camouflage is there so others don't steal ideas before gets revealed which can take couple years.

It's unfortunate that the iNext isn't made from Carbon Fiber like the i3.

If BMW hadn't t sold off its Carbon Fiber Plant in Washington State it would've maybe been a reality.

I'm guessing it wasn't cost effective.

Not sure where BMW gets their Carbon Fiber from now.

They clearly didn't sell as many i3, and i8's as they might have expected.

They must have a good reason. They used it for ///M cars too even the 7 series
