Third row seat not going back up

I have a bench seat in the middle. I have my daughters car seat behind front passenger. I went to put the passenger third row seat down today and it went down. Awesome. Sometimes it doesn't.

But when I went to hit the button for it to move up it won't. I'm guessing it has something to do with the car seat in the seat in front of it, but I'm not sure. Anyone else having any issues like this? This has probably been my biggest and really only issue with the car. Is using those back seat adjustment buttons and never knowing if they will work.

Are you sure the driver's rear seat "control lock-out" (probably not the correct term) is not on. That's the only time I've had trouble with my rear seat buttons. The one time I hauled some friend's kids, I had disabled the rear control to keep them from messing with the shades, etc, and forgot to turn it back off.

Just brainstorming here. Could it also have to do with the car seat being tethered in the 2nd row? I have captains chairs, but when I put the 3rd row down, the 2nd row first has to move forward a little. Maybe the car seat is prohibiting the 2nd row from moving, which also keeps the 3rd row from moving.

Yeah. I think that's what it is. But I'm curious why it let it go down in the first place. Now I have to take the seat out if I want to put it back up. Ah! The horror!

I did the same thing. But I never put it on anymore for that reason. I would think the third row wouldn't go down at all If the lock was on? Not sure I've tried.

I was looking to see if there was a way I can just put it up manually but I can't find that. There is plenty of room for the third seat to go back up, its a bit annoying.

I'm going to keep replying to my own post. .
I was just curious how people accomplish moving the second row for other kids to get into the third row if you have a car seat installed in the second row? I have a bench seat and the seat has to be able to move forward, we haven't had this scenario yet because I only have one child right now.

I think Miss Duvy nailed it.

In this vehicle seems like a lot of functionality needs to be learned over time vs communicated via the manual which leaves quite a bit out in the interest of simplicity I supppose

In my X5, when I put down the second-row seat, it won’t go back up if the headrests of the lowered seat is touching the front seat. I have to move the front seat forward. I rarely lower the second-row seat, but noticed this the other day when I did.

So check to see if the headrest is snugged up against the seat ahead of it

Well I am not sure if you are just good luck or what. I swear it wasn't touching the seat but maybe it was. It worked. Thanks.

Glad you figured it out. Currently have two forward facing car seats on 2nd row bench and tethered. Haven't had any issues so far. Sometimes a delay as the electronics figure things out

The headrest folds down, sort of, so it’s not obvious that it is touching and blocking the seat from coming back up. I’m glad I figured it out fast, or I would have gotten fairly frustrated.

Glad I could help?

Also - if the window lock button from drivers door panel is engaged then the second row seats will also be locked in their positions.

Second row not locked error message.

I just switched from a Honda Odyssey to the X7. My first BMW ever. The error message popped up after 1 week. Also, I don't understand why BMW engineers had to program the seats to do all those dances when we have to lay the second or third row down. I think it is unnecessary and impractical. I hope they will be able to reprogram the software and make it more user friendly and practical.

Dealer Visit

I have owned my X7 since April. This is the second time my third row reclining function has failed. I made another trip to the dealer for a reset. I wish there was a remote manual fix for this kind of failure.

Did you have anything like a car seat blocking the second row from moving?
