Reversing or Backup Assistant
Just wondering how many of you have used it so far successfully? I am just scared to put it into play. I would probably test it out in an open field area.
I see that there is a video on YouTube about it. Pretty amazing! |

While I haven't tried the backup assistant, I tried the parking assistant with the dealer on a test drive. Drove by a parking spot in the lot, and the X7 recognized the spot, and backed itself into the spot. (90 degrees, not parallel park, although it can do that too) Was rather freaky, letting a $100k car back itself into a tight spot with two other $100k cars on each side. And it tried to back up pretty quick, so yeah, you bet I was riding that brake.
Didn't do a perfect job, but it was really good, almost as good as I could have done. It even figured out halfway through the backup, that it wasn't going to make the full cut in one go, and pulled forward on its own to get a better angle. |

Hmmm....when I tried it and pressed the Brake Pedal in between the reversing track, it DINGed and then would not follow the reversing anymore. Am I missing something? Is it like once you release the Brake after activating the Backup Assistant, you just let it go?! Still learning..

I've tried it a few times. You do have to control the acceleration if you're reversing up hill at all. It will warn you if you're accelerating to much.

Find it gimmicky after 1 or 2 times like gesture control I would get bored. I fear a software glitch during the turn could cause a big bump, am old school as far as autonomous tech in cars....and planes

Finally tested it. It's actually pretty cool. A bit scary though and got to get used to it. Thanks for the help!

LOL. Good video of a real-life person. Made me LOL many times, not the least of which the douchey lady stealing his parking spot, then him driving through the wide-open parking lot saying "now I don't have a spot", and taking 6 tries or so to get the system to finally work right. I totally get what he was going for, though.

The feature works well and will impress the passengers but you need to be very aware of the obstacles behind you and must apply your brakes. Until BMW programs in" low speed collision braking" (like every low/mid priced SUV) for the acoustic parking sensors, the system is limited and could be a major safety liability. Try this.. Put some couch cushions behind the vehicle about 20 feet and activate the feature. Or even back up without the feature and see that your $100K BMW will not auto brake itself. This is a very sore issue on the X5 forum. Last edited by MystroX5; 03-30-2019 at 11:22 AM.. |

You gonna have to slightly keep your foot on the brake and carefully watch the surrounding or the car would develop speed and may hit something that was not in the original course. |

I have a reasonable long driveway, at the end of the 75ft driveway I park next to (fairly close) to my wife's minivan. I use the system every morning backing out of my driveway. I watch the camera and sip my coffee. For the non believers: it works flawlessly. Every other day the cleaning lady parks her car in a side parking space halfway down my driveway. Guess what the car sees the parked car, alerts me and stops if it is too close; if not it inches by it. I am a believer. At the end of the driveway the cross traffic alert system takes over. If you are not so sure about the system try it with a few plastic garbage cans, it is after all fun to watch.

I knew it! It should stop itself. Its just we are too scared to try it. It would be great if you can post a video of it being stopped. Thanks.
