Jersey City submits F1 track proposal

New Jersey's Jersey City has officially unveiled plans for a Formula 1 street race, possibly to be staged at night, for as early as the 2012 season. The announcement follows word from Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone that the New York area could be the next home of the American Grand Prix.
A mile from lower Manhattan and under the shadow of the iconic Statue of Liberty, a Jersey City circuit would be situated in Liberty State Park and has been promoted as spectacular in terms of viewing and well connected in terms of public transport.

I still like the idea of a Times Square Street Race better, but I guess that this will have to suffice.

The Newark Star Ledger is reporting this morning that the Mayor of Jersey City has come out against an F1 race at Liberty State Park. Looks like it isn't going to happen.

Tony George is the one behind this. Please don't let this event happen.

Why does F1 have to come to the states and tarnish their image again with a fucking temporary street course. Didn't they learn anything from the Las Vegas GP debacle?

They should either have one of the existing US tracks get retrofitted for being a Level 1, Stage 1, Teir A, whatever the heck the FIA calls tracks that are safe enough for F1 cars to drive on. Or just let them loose @ Barber Motorsports Park.

Now the FOM (Bernie's Division) looks more into the glitz and glamour of the sport, not entirely for the good of the sport. Bernie would rather put F1 into a half-ass track that's very slow and no overtakes because the city can deposit more money to his account.

Las Vegas (the retarded race behind some casino hotels parking lot) is a good history for warning. We should look at least somewhere like Laguna Seca and improve it. somewhere that has good benchmark for a race track.
Not some roads that you can get a good "backdrop". FOM has been focus on the "backdrop view" more than the sport itself.

But the track itself does remind me of Albert Park....

Yupp, TOTALLY!!

And from what I just read over @ Autosport.com, the project has already been axed by the Mayor.

wow. well, don't despair, it didn't even have a main straight! haha

I would love to see one of the "legendary" US tracks like Laguna Seca in the calendar... I wish Indy hadn't gone wrong. If only they hadn't made the infield so twisty (there was a 1st gear corner), too

GOOD!

I want a real race track, not a half ass NY Sightseeing tour!

If they can build a proper one (i doubt it...as no one can spit out that amount of money to fill Bernie's pocket) around NY....then its alright.

Laguna has zero infra structure and public access... the only road to get to the track is a 2 way road connecting Monterey and Salinas... No way this track as awesome as it is could ever hold a major race like an F1 GP

It holds an ALMS race every year. Those are pretty major races.

The FI Ahas specific criteria for what constitutes what kind of track certain types of racing are allowed to race on. I can't recall the details of it, but what it says is that there are 2 places to race in the US for F1 on a permanent circuit. Indy and Barber. The runoffs are the big issue, and Laguna Seca doesn't have enough. Man, if an F1 car went off @ Turn 6, it would get demolished in that wall, and being that the hill drops away right there, they can't really build the runoff out further.

We won't have F1 in the US for a while is my guess, 2014 at best.
