German Touring Car Championship driver and Nürburgring 24-Hour winner Augusto Farfus Jr. got the opportunity to drive his 480-horsepower BMW M4 DTM car around the Nordschleife as part of a Shell Helix oil promotion last month. He was there to give a few sweepstakes winners a ride around the track, but in the process, he inadvertently set a 6:14 Bridge-to-Gantry lap time.

With passenger!

I believe this was a BTG lap to which you have to add at least another 20 seconds... which is still amazing, but you know...

...also thats a rough tranny.

It has to be noted that it's a BTG time. But still quite fast.

Pretty awesome. Also worth noting this car is nothing like an M4 street car. It doesn't even use the same engine. Its still using the NA high revving V8 from the Z4 GT3.

The M6 GT3, however is using a turbocharged V8 based off the M5/6 engine.

Are you sure about that?

I thought that the P65 engine in the Z4 GT3 had some roots with the GTS 4.4L S65, while the DTM P66 engine is a clean sheet design due to regulations.

Not sure about the regulatory explanation, but indeed the two use completely separate engines.

Edit: I see you updated your post with the engine codes too. But at least my links make it so the almighty Google is just a click away.

By the way, contrary to wikipedia entry for the P65, I am very skeptical that the P60 is in any way related to it. Looks like somebody tossed that in there because they figured it made sense rather than actually having any evidence to support it. I don't think the two share any parts at all.

You guys are correct.
Only the P65 is derived from the S65.
The P60 that powered the E46 GTR was a clean sheet design, as is the P66 in the DTM cars. The fact that they are 4.0L V8s is a mere coincidence (and a consequence of regulations)

My point about regulation is that using a derivative of an "off-the-shelf" engine and adapt it to the meet regulation would have likely yielded a non-competitive result. Hence the "clean-sheet design".

...not that regulation stipulates a clean-sheet design

Noted. BTW, I didn't mean to imply that I had any intention to counter your point on that, in case it sounded that way. I just meant that I didn't personally know one way or the other.

It should also be noted that there are points where he was intentionally off pace. Have a look at the 1:10 area. He's chatting with the passenger through Quiddelbacher-Höhe and in to Flugplatz. I think he slows down in Flugplatz to give the passenger a feel for the high-speed line acceleration.

He sure as shit nails other parts of the track hard though. Here's my highlight reel commentary

1:10 Looked like he was full on it up to Hocheichen, then he lifts for Quiddelbacher-Höhe and kind of coasts through Flugplatz

1:40 Big lift for Schwedenkreuz. Not so much as a flick of the steering wheel over the crest. Probably could have gone flat.

2:05 Nice and clean run through Adenauer Forst, which even solicited a gimme-five

2:40 Watch the compression hit at the chicane between Kallenhard and Wehrseifen. Bam!

3:15 Pulls hard out of Ex Müle. So much so he checks up a bit.

3:45 The fourth-left after Bergwerk was flat; as it should be in a DTM car.

4:00 Just the slightest lift at Mutkurve.

4:30 Blasts it out of the Karussell.

4:55 Carries 5th through Hedwigshöhe, heyo!

5:30 Lifts just before Pflanzgarten, but that might be typical in a DTM car; not sure.

5:40 Another opportunity to carry 5th taken at Sprunghügel.

5:45 Hauls ass through Pflanzgarten II!

From there it's pretty clinical. Must have been a lot of fun, but the time isn't full 10/10ths pace.

That engine sounded very very nice! Only thing you can buy cheap straight from the factory that sounds close for little money is a motorcycle.

As was mentioned elsewhere, the BMW M4 DTM uses the P66 engine, which is a completely different design than the Z4 GT3's P65 engine.

The P66 engine has no roots in a production engine.
