Other issues w/X7??

While I wait patiently for my X7 to be built, I was wondering if anyone experienced more serious issues with the new design.

Reason for asking is that BMW just recently bought back my 2019 X5 40i due to a bunch of problems that this particular model had. They were mostly electrical/computer related being it was a first year production of the new idrive and engine for that model. It started with a faulty module which was replaced under warranty, then two days later the engine overheated because of a faulty belt that cracked and fell off.. then another computer glitch that failed to operate the cooling system, which ended up in a total power shutdown on the middle of the highway. This 3 month old vehicle spent more time in the service center than on the road. Anyway, during one of my "visits" to the service center I received an X7 50i as a loaner. Rode that for about a week but it wasn't long before I was looking to swap my X5 for one.

Now I wait for my Arctic Grey m-sport X7 to arrive from SC but I can't stop wondering about the possible issues that it might have being it has the very same engine/technology design.

Anyone experience any of the issues I mentioned above? Obviously it will all be taken care of under warranty. Just a pain in the rear having to deal with it.

All good here. I have about 2,100 miles and no complaints. The only issue I had was the display key would reboot every time I'd try and wake it. New key, no issue since.

I had a 2003 745i which was bought back by BMW in early '03 (mechanical issue) and I promptly ordered another. That was with iDrive version #1. My '13 750Li was bought back due to the collision avoidance system going off line. It was in the shop for over 30 days. CA law puts the cutoff at 30 days to qualify as a lemon. Again I ordered another 7. The longer the dealer had the car the more we narrowed down the cause. I was able to recreate the issue in the replacement car. Had to do with systems syncing and wasn't really an "issue". It happened when the engine was off but radio was on. Then the radio powered off (battery save) and since I was still in the car, I powered up the radio. Finally when I started the engine, I'd get the fault. Syncing issue between the camera and radar (as far as we could tell).

So did you go from an X5 40i to an X7 50i? That's quite the jump!

I originally did then changed my mind in the last minute right before it went into production. Believe me I lost sleep making that decision. I drive 100 miles round trip to work each day. The thought of filling up 2-3 times per week was the deciding factor. Drove my dealer crazy going back and forth. I think the 40i has plenty of power for daily driving but yes the 50i is truly the way to go with this vehicle. It's just not practical for me as a daily driver. I had a 2012 X5M during a time when gas prices were at its all time high. Wife said I was nuts but I did it anyway.
I do not want to repeat that mistake. Had fun but paid the price at the pump. no more.

And the tank is tiny!! I’m filling up my 50i at least once a week, and I’m just driving around town.

It’s not the tank, it’s the 50i (and the gas pedal the begs to be mashed, lol). Seriously though, I think the tank is about 23 gallons. We’ve had our 40i 10 days and haven’t had to refill it yet and that includes a 2.5 hour drive from the PDC and daily trips to work. errands, as well as dropping the kids off at school. The range on a full tank is nearly 500 miles! I think that’s pretty good for a vehicle this size.

According to Car & Driver, it holds 21.9 gallons. My previous GL550 held 26 gallons, so I’m filling up a lot more. I’m sure it’s the 50i engine, but it’s not pulling that much more power than what i had before.

You’re right, but power is irrelevant. With your city driving most GLS550s are getting around 13 mpg. The 2019 50i is 15 mpg. With the larger tank of The MB - you’d only get an extra 13 miles or so between fill ups.

All I know is that I drove two GL550’s for nine years, and I’m filling up the X7 a lot more frequently.

Give it time. You’ve had your X7 for only 19 days. I’m confident that the range of a fill up on your X7 is greater than your 2010 GLS550.

If not, get it checked, especially if it’s so noticeably less. For example - to get just 55-60 miles less out of your x7 tank - you’d getting under 12 mpg for your city driving.

You're filling up more frequently because your X7 has a smaller gas tank. The GLS fuel tank is 4.5 gallon larger:

GLS - 26.4 gallon
X7 - 21.9 gallon

On average, our 50i is getting almost 1 MPG better fuel economy (15.1 mpg) than our GLS (14.2 mpg). That said, BMW should have used a larger fuel tank.

Yes. I mentioned that in a previous post. Glad to hear that about the mpg. Are you comparing a 450 or 550 to your 50i?

I think BMW builds in a big reserve. They used to put the high-pressure fuel pump inside the gas tank, the purpose being to keep the pump cooler (not sure, but I assume this is still where they put the fuel pump). That means the gas level can't get too low, otherwise the fuel pump might overheat. This results in significantly lower gas tank usability. Currently I drive a 750 and don't have range concerns, but my prior '19 X3 M40i had a 17+ gallon tank and it would only take 13-14 gallons when near empty!

I listed the fuel tank size for the GLS 550 but the 450 has the same exact tank.

Yes. I should’ve been clearer. I was wondering if the GLS that was “1 mpg better” than your 50i was a 450 or 550.

But - Not compared to a 2010 GLS550 that missduvey used to have. The x7 is over 3mpg better. Despite the x7’s smaller tank, it still has a greater range between fill ups than the ‘10 GLS550. The mpg savings adds up.

GLS 550 = 14.2 mpg

X7 50i = 15.1 mpg

Both have V8 engines.
