Trailer Hitch

The Trailer Hitch really makes the rear look ugly. I know it may be too soon to ask but is anyone aware of any alternatives?

Not sure of any alternatives, but just to make sure you know, you lose comfort opening with it. The kick motion to open the tailgate.

The best alternative, IMHO, I have seen for BMW is the Stealth Hitch:

https://stealthhitches.com/products/...7-2019-present

Admittedly though, I would prefer the OEM solution over this or any other aftermarket solution for the X7 (even though this looks better cosmetically since the receiver is hidden). Mechanically, this aftermarket solution should be just as capable and safe as the factory solution as this one appears to attach to the X7 at the same attachment points. However, the factory solution also includes some additional towing electronic modules (and buttons) that interface with the rest of the car (like iDrive, the air suspension, etc) - a much more seamless and complete integration with the X7 IMHO. I am sure that some coding could "turn on" some of the trailer functionality in iDrive. But adding the other trailer hitch electronic interfaces to the SUV may not be as easy without additional wiring harnesses and/or the trailer hitch module. It would require a bit more research to confirm if the factory trailer wiring is pre-installed so that adding an aftermarket trailer hitch solution is a bit more plug an play.

If you are curious, the factory trailer hitch removal/installation procedure can be seen here:

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...ies/1Vne7hY0CR

And according to RealOEM, there appears to be a possible factory trailer hitch retrofit out there based on the info comment in the parts list below (but I don't know if this retrofit is available at US dealers yet or if at all):

I keep waiting to hear the reason why the hitch they get on the Euro models isnt offered here.

Do you lose Comfort Access opening just when you're using the trailer hitch (which seems obvious) or do you lose it just by ordering a vehicle with the trailer hitch option? The vehicle ordering guide says that by ordering the trailer hitch you "delete the 8SL trailer hitch prewire". It doesn't mention anything about Comfort Access. Thanks in advance.

That's a valid question. I'm guessing it has something to do with the design of the hitch itself. It's not a rigid attachment point, and the hitch is curved

It has to do with the differences between US vs Europe vehicle safety certification standards (most likely some type of crash safety certification requirement). Not the first time different vehicle options/configurations are required in different countries due to different safety standards.

+1 Thank the DOT. Unlike every other goverment agency, they aren't very progressive with adding / modifying regs. Just look at the laser light technology fiasco. I would so have waited to get that amazing tech on our 40i, but what they offer us as "laser lights" has all the best smart features disabled in them. no thanks, but I'd love to have the full tech version they sell in the rest of the world.

Very true.

With OEM Trailer Hitch, you get Trailer Stabilization Control to stop trailer swinging. I think this safety feature alone is worth getting the OEM hitch over 3rd party ones.

I personally don't care about the comfort access (kick open) feature of the tailgate. It's never worked well in my previous BMWs - I have to keep kicking in different directions and different speed to get it to open, making me look like fool
