Sadly it seems like it, although even BMW is guilty of this. In the 8-series (even the $133k M8 coupe), the entire center console tunnel and lower doors are hard touch plastics like a 3-series unless you opt for the extended leather packs. And its also not like this hard touch plastic is very low and away from the driver, its very high up by your knees and was one of the first things I noticed when I first sat in the 8 and thought it was stupid to put hard touch plastic in a vehicle starting at $110k! (This was before the 840 was available)

But we all know what this is really about. $$$
Try and order a Porsche. From contrasting seat stitching to leather covered key fob. Multiple transmissions with sub categories as to what options for that transmission. Ash tray delete. It's insane.

Well I was being specific yet you are implying I was being vague. I meant "spec up" the interior from plastic to I don't know better plastic? On a car that is already at $100k is baffling to me honestly.

So are squeaks and rattles but I had them in my X5M. Until this year, MB has outsold BMW so they are doing something right for the masses.

For nearly a decade MB was behind the times and not outselling anyone. Audi & BMW were crushing it.

Squeaks and rattles and quality of interior are apples and oranges so your point is irrelevant.

Mercedes still outsold BMW globally though and has been for years, so... got to remember, U.S. sales aren't the only important metric. I think they also only sold roughly ~8500 less vehicles in the U.S. so not too much of a loss, not to mention the SEC scandal for BMW could easily have accounted for a lot of sales.

Actually summer tires are louder. I drove on Summer and Winter tires, and I agree with the other guy, summer tires are louder. When I have my summer tires on my car its extremely loud.
Summer tires are generally more quiet as the rubber compound is softer. Living in Florida, my only experience is summer vs all season, and summer tires are much quieter than all season's.
Backwards. Winter rubber is the softest you can get, by design. Stays more pliable in colder weather which aids grip. Rubber compound and tread patter are both significant factors that contribute to road noise.

Good to know. As I said, I don't have any experience with winter tires. Only summer and all seasons. And the softer rubber compound (summer tires) are much more quiet than the all seasons. If winter tires are even softer rubber compound than summer, I would certainly agree with you that winter tires must be very quiet.

That’s total nonsense! Of course summer tires are more quiet! They have less profil and the rubber gets much softer because in summer the outside temperature is also much warmer. The most impact has the tire tread

You have a way slanted idea of what quality is and means. If I build a house and two years later the floor starts to squeak or tiles start coming off the floor that is poor quality. Poor craftsmanship. However you want to call it. Quality lacked somewhere making it, the product, poor quality. I work in an industry that delivers multimillion dollar products to customers and if it goes to them a blemish anywhere that is poor quality. But, you have to be okay with your squeaks and rattles being quality not me. I'll take that shit back until it's fixed because squeaks and rattles weren't on the standard equipment or options list. If I wanted that I'd go buy some true American plastic for a fraction of the cost and the expectation.

I was at a car show yesterday and got to examine the 2020 GLS 450 up close. It's a very nice update and has a lot to offer but falls short in few areas. The first and most annoying was the headroom accessing the drivers seat. I put the drivers seat all the way back and all the way down and still my head brushed the top of the door opening. There was a 2020 GLE sitting beside it and I had more headroom getting into it. The second area of concern was the quality of the leather seat covers. They didn't look like MB quality seats. They felt good to sit on just appeared to be lower quality than expected. Lastly, using the new MBUX touchpad is not user-friendly and the large twin tablet looks like MB should have put more thought into finishing the dash with some leather over hangs similar to the S Class. I say this as a previous owner of three GL/GLS's. After viewing every similar SUV on the market I was happy to return to my X7 which has the most comfortable seats I sat in that day.
