Audi SQ7 and SQ8 look like legit competition

With 500hp, these now seem to give the X7 a run for its money. I love my X7, but the SQ8 in particular looks pretty fantastic in the photos.

Thoughts on a comparison of these?

I have been an Audi enthusiast and fan for decades. Come from a family and group of friends full of VAG enthusiasts but with the Q7 there is gobs of torque, low hp numbers considering it is a 4.0 "tri-turbocharged" motor. The tech is there, the interior is spot on but all things considered I would go with the RS6 Avant over the SQ7/8 but if a SUV/SAV are a must then the new X5M and the GLE 43/63 may be better options on the whole with newer designs and underpinnings.

Just wait until you get a lease-quote on the Audi - you better run WITH your money...

I can hardly wait to turn in my lease and get the X7 - no more monthly $1,350-payments on a $88K vehicle for me...

I had the same exact payments on the same exact car. Ridiculous and so glad when I switched to the x7

3 years ago, the Q7 had basically no competition and I knew exactly that the deal I signed wasn't a good lease-deal. However, I also knew that when I went with financing for a few $$/month more instead, I would have to deal with a huge negative equity after 3 years so I went with the lesser of two evils.

What was the residual % for the Q7 from back then, if you don't mind me asking? Just curious why that lease quote was so high

I'd say more like competition for the x5m/x6m and an Alpina XB7

I just located an old thread on Edmunds where I was able to see the numbers that were effective back then (February 2017):

On the 2017 Q7 Prestige, the residual for a 36 month lease with 10K miles/year was 59%. That wasn't actually too bad.

The main reasons why the deal wasn't as attractive was the fact that:

A. You could only get 6% off on the Audi compared to the 10% off with BMW.

B. Absolutely NO incentives on the Q7.

C. A top-tier MF of 0.00196

i remember when it debuted it had the 6% cap at almost every dealer. they only had 7% in the car. the first batch were sticker unless you already had an audi and you got $1500 loyalty discount. it is the reason why i skipped it when it debuted. it was $92k equipped the way i wanted it, no leather dashboard and a six cylinder with only 6% off. they were throwing in "free audicare" as if that was some sort of incentive or dangling carrot to get me to sign.

Yeah, the 'free AudiCare'.

AudiCare, in 2017, was - I believe - $895. Their 'generous' free offer is easy to explain: If you opt for AudiCare on a lease, your residual goes up by 1%. Soooo...1% of $92K is $920 - there's your free AudiCare. They weren't offering you anything coming out of their pocket. In fact, they were probably after the commission for that plan.

I believe in my case, AudiCare increased my monthly payment by $3 so it was a no-brainer...

No offense to any die-hard Audi fans out there, but for several years now (with few exceptions) I've found their vehicles to be as visually compelling as toaster ovens. Very... utilitarian exteriors. And the interiors too cold and emotionless, as if they were designed by AI (or perhaps by Darth Vader's interior decorator)

Or maybe I'm just resentful that the X7's grille takes so much flak... when Audi is allowed to put that gaping maw on the SQ8.

That said... the RS 6 Avant is sexy as hell.

After the debut of the A5 and A7, all of the designs have started blending together. To be fair, all the BMWs after Bangle's time are just different sizes of the same sausage as well.

The RS6 is quite something. Should give the E63 a run for its money. I can't wait to hear how that RS6 exhaust note is in real life.

I looked hard at the Q8 but the throttle lag issue with those is just outright dangerous so I wrote it off.

No offense taken.

I actually agree with you. The design certainly wasn't the reason why I got the Q7. Same applies to the X7 as well. It would still be my pick even with a grille that's twice as big...

I will say, their engines are nice, but they’re not BMW level. The engine in my X7 50i is just outstanding.

after the $1500 discount didn't work out they tried to convince me to finance or lease for a better offer and that was the 6% off msrp. i had no interest in either option. i just wanted to buy it and they couldn't do anything for me. from that point on until a few months ago audi did not get any more of my business. it was such a nickel and dime move that soured a twenty year relationship.

When I had 3 months left on my current Q7 lease, I got an offer from Audi that if I leased another Q7, they would cover those payments. Since that was $4,000 and considering the hefty discounts on the 2019 Q7s, I played with the idea of getting a nicely equipped one for my mother. Even with 15% off, the one I was looking at with an MSRP of about $70K was still north of $850/month. Their lease deals are still so bad, not even the biggest discounts can make up for that.

I passed on that one....

Depends on your needs. The Q7 is significantly smaller especially for the middle and 3rd row.

Q8 is a midsize SUV. Not big enough to be a X7 comparison (not luxurious enough either). Audi doesnt make a X7 competition. Its either GLS or X7.

Agreed but many consider the Q7 it's competition but I feel it is more in line with the X5 (at least up until the G05 since it no longer has a third row)Q8 against X6; X7 also considered a competitor with the Range Rover.
