So I am looking to buy oil for my m60i and it is clear as mud.

Looked at Mobil and does not extend to 23 and X models not even listed. Liquid moly same thing.

Anyone know a definite and how much needed ??I found 7 liters but not sure.

Does it say the same thing in iDrive if you open the embedded owners manual and do a keyword search for OIL?

I know your version may look different than the pics below…but the design concept is still the same…you should be able to do a keyword search for OIL to see what it says in regard to viscosity for your specific engine. The iDrive owners manual is VIN specific:

I was given the same thing nfo that the general manual gave.

Called two dealers and here is what was said.

BMW lol 01fe has 0-30w which I think I should use living in FL

BMW LL17fe+ only comes 0-20w

S68 m60i engine take 10.75 litres

Thanks for the update...interesting that BMW is so vague about the oil viscosity.

You can see they were specific as to the oil viscosity in the screen shots below from my old 2013 650ixGC (and it's the same with my 2014 X5 & 2015 650ix GC):

Oh, I'm not so sure that 0W20 is fine for the M60i. In the X5 and X6 user manual you can find information that both 0W12 and 0W20 are not suitable for the M60i engines. However, the X7 user manual states that 0W20 is not suitable for the M50i and 0W12 is not suitable for the M60i.

How can this be? They are the same engine, the S68. How can 0W20 be fine for an S68 mounted in the X7 M60i and not fine for the S68 mounted in the X5 M60i?

I will use 0W30 LL19FE only.

Good call. The shop I had my oil changed at said 0w20 is selected to reduce required oil pump force resulting in a tiny increase in MPG.

I decided to go with 0-w30. Last time near a dealer I bought 11 qts of the 01-fe

Nobody cares about this tiny bit of fuel when buying a full size SUV with a twin turbo V8. I wouldn't risk damaging the engine to save this few drops of gas.

Does anyone know if it comes from the factory with 0W30 or 0W20? I will for sure change the oil after the first 1200 miles.

I'm confused why people with new X7s are concerned about oil changes, it's free for 3yrs and you should be using the BMW recommended oil.

I’m old school 5k oil changes. Important to get those new shavings out of the oil or those shavings have clogged the filter which restricts flow and results affect engine.

The oil can handle 10k maybe but the filter clogged is what will make you suffer.

I do my own oil changes and I think 11 qts of bmw oil filter and new plug cost me around $160 and another 46 minutes of my time.

Maybe bmw likes the 10k so that after warranty runs out issues start and a new vehicle is purchased by those who can afford it helping their bottom line.

This is all my logic and opinion. To each his own. I paid cash for my 23 m60i and hope to keep for a while and save to pay cash for the next vehicle

I understand, when I first got a BMW with no dipstick and CBS 15 yrs ago I too was a little old school, but since I have run several BMWs to almost 100k miles doing CBS with no issues. I DIY everything not under warranty or maintenance, but there is no short or long term savings, if anything just change the filter & add a liter.

Also if you do an oil change between each CBS oil change and use different oil there is a very slight chance of creating an issue.

No problem you doing what gives you peace of mind, but deviating heavily from BMW recommended service then confuses some people who are not as knowledgeable.

Some of us grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's where engine design, manufacturing and oils weren't as advanced as they are today. We were taught to do oil change every 3k miles to prevent damage.
Some have seen the new oils and engines technologies and are now doing longer oil change intervals, while others are still not comfortable with it and want to change more often than BMW recommends so it's not covered under the 3 year free maintenance program.

I am in the same boat also, planning to change the oil around 1,200 also. I already got the oil filter ready , not so sure about the oil weight yet and still deciding.
