Wireless Charger Charging slow.

Does anyone else have issues with wireless charging of cell phones in the X7? At best the wireless charger in my X7 maintains a charge on my iPhone X when in use but no additional charge added. I went on a 4 hr trip and at the beginning of the trip the phone was at 50%, and I used navigation and music and at the end of the trip I was still at 50% while charging wirelessly. I plan to talk to the dealer about this issue. I think BMW should correct this issue. What use is wireless CarPlay if you still have to plug the phone up to charge.

Same issue here with my M5! I think it used to charge pretty fast in the early weeks of delivery. Not sure when it's slowed down unless it happened after the 1200 mile break in service with a software update! I'll have to check with my SA as well.

I don't personally use wireless charging now, but when the technology was nascent, it was considerably slower than wired charging... and was made even slower by, for instance, the presence of a phone case, as the material between the charging surface and the surface of the phone further degraded charging speed. Do you use a case on your phone? If so, I'd be curious if you experienced better results with a naked phone.

I do know that GPS navigation, in particular, is very power hungry, so if the wireless charging is slow, it's not surprising you'd be breaking even on battery levels.

groove1, the iPhone X supports up to 7.5W wireless charging, but in practice, that's only about as fast under the best circumstances (no case) as the 5W plug that's included with the phone. Compound that with the presence of a case on the phone, if you have one, and the possibility that BMW's wireless charging pad might not even be a 7.5W unit... it would certainly account for slow charging.

I use wireless CarPlay literally every time I'm in my car, though I rely exclusively on BMW's built-in navigation when I need guidance. I supposed if I were on a longer road trip, I'd probably just go ahead and plug it in though.

My home wireless charger charges pretty fast but I am typically not steaming music and navigating.

Hi did you all ever get a resolution for this? Same problem here with a 2020 X7. Slow charge and gets very hot. Flip side, our 2019 X5 charges fast and will actually charge up to 100% even with carplay use on long trips.

That's quite interesting info.

I have basically the same issue so i asked my dealer for replacement. The charger-pad part is ready, we just need to set an appointment.

EDIT: According to RealOEM, there are 84108722754(up to 11/2018), 84108729771(up to 11/2019), 84109434000 (from 11/2019, used in X7). Could it be the case?

Are you saying that you feel you have a defective wireless charger or are you saying that BMW updated the part and that's what fixes the overheating problem?

I have no idea, i think it's defective in my car (warm on touch when nothing is present, overheats even when phones are not used, barely charges anything, sometimes interrupts charging by turning off itself completely). I let my dealer know and he ordered a new part without asking and is ready to replace. So we'll find out.

But according to the user above and RealOEM, there are more types in X5 G05. If the older version was able to properly charge phones without issues, then there could be something wrong with the last version (which should be the only one used in X7s).

FWIW, on my new X7 M50i and iPhone 12 Pro Max, placing the phone in the charger, it does get very warm, but has yet to get too hot or shut itself down, even when sitting in there on an 8 hour drive.

Charging rate seems fairly normal. Probably not as fast as plugging her in, but it's fine.

TBH, my biggest issues are putting the phone in or taking it out while there's drinks in the heated/cooled cupholders. Awkward. And multiple times forgetting the phone in the tray when i leave the car.

Just if you don't know that, there is an option in iDrive to enable a notification message to not forget your phone while you exit a car.

Interesting. Is your iPhone 12 in a case?

It would be nice if that notification was also on the console screen.

I don't have my X7 yet to play around with coding, but I vaguely recall being able to change the charge rate in other G platform vehicles.

Took it in for oil change today and explained the issue. They will take a look. He said in their experience the issue is the phone case or phone itself. Would make sense except same phone charges just fine in X5. For those asking, on a 4hr drive, with phone sitting in the charger it showed charging but never moved more than 1% higher. In the X5 over the same period, the phone would charge from almost zero to close to 80%. Go figure.

Yeah, I've got that turned on. I guess I'm not fully tuned in to the car, yet, so when it gives me a "ding" as I shut off and exit the car, to notice that it's telling me the phone's still there.

Yeah, it's a 12 pro max, in an Otterbox Defender case. I also have to make sure the little rubber flap that covers the charging port is closed, for it to properly fit in the charging tray. I have the horizontal tray with the heated and cooled cupholders.

I also have an iPhone 12 Pro Max in a Case Mate Soap Dish case. Seems to work fine with regard to charging and no overheating.... though I haven’t really had it in there for long periods of time. 20 M50i

I get about 10% charge in 1 hour for my iPhone 11 Pro Max while using Spotify in CarPlay.

My phone doesn’t successfully charge in my MY19 X7. It started to happen around the time I got an iPhone 12. The charging light comes on briefly and subsequently goes off. Contrast this with our MY20 760 which charges my 12 without issue.
