As previously announced, BMW will be returning to DTM racing - beginning in the 2012 DTM season with a new M3 DTM race car. As part of the DTM event at Munich's Olympic Stadium on 16th and 17th July 2011, BMW will present a BMW M3 DTM Concept Car for the first time.

Along with the 2012 DTM Concept Car, on display will be the 1987 BMW M3 DTM, the BMW M1 Procar from 1981, and the Mini Rally Monte Carlo car from the 1960s.

Quote:
The M3 DTM Concept Car will give the first impression of what next year’s car will look like. This was announced by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt, who takes over from Mario Theissen on 1st July, at Tuesday’s pre-event DTM press conference in Munich.

The presentation will take place in front of media representatives on Friday 15th July, where they will also gain some further insights about the DTM programme of BMW. The car will then be on show to the public at BMW Welt over the remainder of the weekend (16-17th).

“The fact that the DTM is staging an event in Munich this year is obviously exciting and interesting for us too,” said Marquardt. “The location right on our doorstep gives the term ‘home event’ a whole new meaning in motorsport in the future. Although we will not be competing in 2011, we want to use this opportunity to give DTM fans and BMW Motorsport followers a taste of what they can look forward to next season. For this reason, this event is the logical venue to unveil a BMW M3 DTM Concept Car. Under the motto ‘BMW welcomes DTM’ we will welcome the series to Munich and follow the event at the Olympic Stadium closely. We hope the spectators will also enjoy the many classic BMW cars in action as part of the support programme. Whether the 1987 BMW M3 DTM, the BMW M1 Procar from 1981, or the Mini Rally Monte Carlo car from the 1960s: we think there will be something to suit every taste.“

BMW Welt will be dominated by motorsport throughout the entire DTM race weekend at Munich's Olympic Stadium. The main attraction will be the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car. In addition, BMW is also exhibiting some of the historic cars, including the 1979 BMW M1 Art Car designed by Andy Warhol, the 1986 BMW 635 CSi and the BMW M3 GTR from 2001. The BMW M3 from the late 1980s, which notched up countless victories and two of the three DTM titles for the brand, will also be on display. With more than 1,500 individual wins to its name, this car is still regarded as one of the most successful touring cars of all time.

Development of the BMW M3 DTM for the coming season has been in full flow since BMW announced its DTM comeback in October last year, and has so far run to plan. The first tests will be performed shortly. BMW will be represented with three strong teams in the DTM in 2012. BMW Team Schnitzer, in action with the BMW M3 GT at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE) this weekend, will run two BMW M3 DTM cars, as will BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG.

This is very exciting. I have a few questions maybe some of those more familiar with racing can answer.

With M3 production ending soon, how does this affect the current M3 running in DTM for 2012? Surely they wouldn't run the old M3 when the new one is announced. Or would they?

ALMS - the M3 has been doing great in the American LeMans Series with the NA V8. When the new turbo M3 is released, BMW will HAVE to use the 6 cylinder turbo engine right? They can not run with the current V8 unless its considered a "production vehicle". They have had similar issues in the past when they ran the V8 E46 M3 GTRs. They swept 1-2 wins but did not use a production engine so there were some problems.

Any insight from more seasoned ALMS and DTM fans would be greatly appreciated.

I am by no means an expert on this matter, but as for the ALMS/GT cars, since there will be a MY 2012 M3 I would assume there will be no issues with the M3 GT car for next year. But a lot of the rumors around the tracks is that BMW was going to leave the GT racing after this year or next. So I’m not sure the engine type would even be an issue. My personal feelings are that I love watching the M3s fight it out with the Corvettes, Porsches, and Ferraris in the ALMS and Le Mans Series in Europe. I think it is some of the best racing on the planet right now and for BMW to be able to say they beat Ferraris and Porsches at the 12 hours of Sebring this year that should be a nice feather in their cap. If we are lucky enough that they return to GT racing in 2012 I think they should give the Rahal Letterman Team from the ALMS a shot at the 24 hours of Le Mans!

DTM will go back to coupes from 2012 on, so it'll be an E92 M3 chassis.

E92 M3 will still be available next year, so no issues running an E92 M3 DTM car.

Best regards,
south

Thanks south. But I wonder how this is viable for BMW to develop and run a car for 1 year, unless theres some other plan.

Maybe they are just taking the majority of the ALMS GT car tech with new externals. But I'm pretty sure mechanical regs are different from GT to DTM too.

So curious how this is going to play out.

I can't think of a better way to say farewell to the E90 M3. This is going to blow people away. Also i expect vendors to start producing replica parts seen on the car which could also be interesting.

Gents and Ladies, don't get ahead of yourself.
In July we will see a demo - that means it cannot drive yet, just for the looks.
THe actual car is still in developement and might change. Also the rules for DTM are about to be changed for 2012....
So guys, be patient and for now, focus on M-Fest on the 'Ring tomorrow
