Just used Traffic Jam Assistant for the first time!

Hey all,

I just used the traffic jam assistant and driver assistant pro for the first time yesterday on my 2021 X5 going to downtown Chicago from the suburbs during rush hour, and it was amazing! There was about 20 minutes of delay with bumper to bumper traffic and I was initially nervous using it, but it worked great. I was impressed by its ability to stop and go effortlessly. I can't imagine not having it on any car moving forward!

Chicago traffic jams are definitely a great test. I'm not sure I would trust any system down there.

I went back & forth every day from up here in the north suburbs to the near south side for 4 years, so I got used to that "driving" style.

Yeah, definitely a tech that makes life easier. Pretty sure it's a must-have on my cars moving forward.

I love it, use it all the time when on trips. The traffic jam assist sure takes a lot of physical stress out of traffic jams. BUT. . .I never fully trust any of it, it's software running a huge bot, you always need to be alert and ready to intervene but that sure is easier than manually working the brakes and gas

Absolutely, I still pay attention and hover my foot over the brake from time to time. But it really reduced the stress greatly while stuck in traffic.

Same; I do use the opportunity to screw with something if I need to, but I'm still watchful.

Not sure whether I'll ever be able to completely trust self-driving, but I look forward to trying to learn: It would be nice to be able to have two glasses of wine at a restaurant if I wanted, instead of just the one, and let the car drive me home. I'm also elderly; and while I've been lucky, and remain fit and active, I have many friends who struggle with driving for various reasons. It would be a great boon to them to become mobile again.

To me it feels like a little taste of the future.

I know this is the BMW forum.......but in peak hr driving times, you can always spot the Tesla's and who is using autonomous driving. Mainly as they tend to leave huge gaps in all the lanes, and everyone is cutting right, left and doing all sorts of 360's to get past and around the autonomous driving who doesn't know how to maintain traffic flow in any lane during this time. Left Lane Loafer Aside, IME, it creates a hazard in traffic flow due to not only lefties needing to make rights to overtake, but you have the same lane shifting pattern in the middle and right lane ......as them dang Tesla's are just causing in all of them with huge gaps.

It's fine when there is no traffic and things are flowing......but that's my gripe at least with them -tesla's drivers-

I'm 50/50 on using it. If there is a space, someone will slide in.
In general, I like to maintain enough throttle to have a gap, not need to brake or be a jack rabbit..

Before CV, anyone own the one road M-F knew how to maintain flow....
Seems like everyone is on the road these days at all hours of the day though

I get what you're saying. I was always racing to beat the guy in front of me, then when I did, there was another guy in front of me, so I had to pass them too, and on and on it went. That was my driving style for, well, like forever Then my work offered the six hr driving course where you get a discount on your auto insurance and since it had been forever since I have anything to do with driver education, I decided to take the in-person course. I have to say, I really enjoyed it, didn't think I would. I learned a number of things that were new and that I had forgotten.

There was a section on drivers like me who just had to beat everyone where ever we were going. So I decided to do a test, for two weeks straight I used cruise control, setting it at a measly 5mph above the limit on my commute to and from work, like 20 miles each way. I made note of who passed me to the point where I couldn't see them anymore. I can't tell you how many of those cars I caught up to at the light getting off the interstate. Time and time again.

From that point forward, I use cruise control when ever possible and just like DAP and ETJ assist, my driving stress level went way down. Its something about using cruise control that I no longer care who passes me but if I'm driving without it, I do seem to still drive like an eedeot

I don't like being -cut- short not out of principal , but moreso as the car will need to brake in order to allow the person getting into the lane and you can't always control how much distance the guy in back of you is or if he is paying attention......so the maintain the gap comment is not so I'm not the fastest one there, is just simply to maintain flow of the lane.....and not have enough space for us typical New Yawker's....to wanna take advantage if the gap is wide enough that they can steer their nose in and not even take consideration the car (whether under driver driven or car software driven) will need to brake hard.

Just tried it today due to this thread....

Eh, not a fan. I can see how one may like it ....no input. I'd rather feather the throttle, see how the next 3 cars are in front .....and understand how much throttle I need versus assist using sensors and speeding and braking as such.

Off to you tube this but to see if any video's exist of how much *braking* is displayed on BMW's.....when using this.

For example, Tesla has this one pedal mode. I swore a Tesla driver was riding the brakes while does 65+, which was annoying as FcK......but in further digging, it was due to the specific mode of driving it chose, etc.

The brake lights go on when the brakes are engaged just as if you were driving.

Does it make it look like a semi jack-rabbit - braking syndrome....

I only ask as the Tesla....with the one pedal where it appears the driver was riding the brakes at 65+.......threw me for a curveball on wTF until I dug into it and it was due to both driver input or the like....and whatever the one pedal mode and gawd knows other options on Tesla that made the driver appear as nutz

It certainly isn't smart enough to read the traffic flow and adjust accordingly. It just attempts to maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front often accelerating hard then braking hard to achieve it. It can't see people with a turn signal on politely asking to switch lanes either. I wouldn't be without it though.

I too am someone who gets very stressed in traffic and can’t stand being stuck behind someone who leaves a gap. I am hopeful that I’ll just be able to relax a bit and let the car do its thing and not get stressed or upset if people cut me off.

I love DAP on my X5. I would have never bought it but I can't live without now. Get on the freeway, average speed 5MPH, set cruise to speed limit and it goes hands free.
