Snow driving with summer tires
Just curious if anyone has ventured into some decent amounts of snow with their summer tires? I have much better snow vehicles in the stable, but none as comfortable as the X7. I'm tempted to try it out, but the 22" summer Conti's make me a bit nervous.

😂 I was fishing for the opposite of what I already knew. Thank you. I'll leave it parked by the M5 and 2002.
It looks so good with the ski box I put on top today, though. Here's a shot parked outside when I was running errands today. |

Long time ago I got caught in a snow squall 10 miles from home in my 930. It was the longest 10 miles of my life with the four ways on the entire time. Putting a $120k BMW in the ditch just for a experiment will haunt you. These 315 rear tires are skis even in cold weather with a dusting.

I'll order snow tires for next year to see what the beast can do. For now, the tried and true snow monster is our GX470. The 1 series is good with snows, but I never take time to put them on. |

We just got a x7 40i with 22 and contis the tires are amazing in snow!!
I didn't believe it either but a friend left his km his x5 and said they were awesome. They aren't as good as the M8s winters but are on par with every all season I've ever driven on I also had contis on my XFR and drove a long time in winter before switching to dedicated winters. |

Summer tires in snow is a bad idea. I got caught in an 1" of rain and hydroplaning my m850. Summer tires don't work in rain or snow. It's a recipe for a big disaster. Seriously don't do it. |

Below 40F, summer tires start to get rock hard like a stone. You will have almost 0 traction even on a dry road. DON’T even try it.
I have All season tires on my X7 and I am going to get snow tires, because it is the best on snow/ice |

Just picked up summer set of Conti's today and installed on my summer set of 22" wheels. We had an extended conversation about not driving or even having the vehicle exposed/sitting outside in 40 degree temps or less will make the tire harden and show cracking quickly. He said driving on them in snow is deadly and makes the tires almost useless. Have to get a true winter set up with all seasons or a true winter tire.

Short answer - don't. You can get a set of 21 in wheels with mounted, balanced and TPMS included winter tires from TireRack for around $3000 which is a fraction of the cost of stuffing the car in a ditch with your summer tires.

I gassed up my M2C before putting it away for the winter on dry cold roads and it fishtailed like I was some kid with his daddy's car and I was in "ecco mode".

I can attest, so glad we got winter wheels/tires. Went with the 754Ms with Scorpions. Unbelievable in the snow!! Here in Chicago, we just got about 8”... just awesome driving around. :-)

I've heard of people that have used them in emergent type situations to get out or through snow and ice covered roads. They are not for prolonged use, or to really replace robust snow chains.
I actually recently ordered a pair. My 330i has been sitting since snow fell, as I didn't have a chance to get the winter wheels on beforehand. The snow socks should let me back it out of the driveway and down the street to the tire shop to do the winter tire swap. Will see when they get here. I'll be furious if not. I live outside DC and have a one car garage that my motorcycles need to be in. Garage space is tough to find in my neighborhood without spending $5MM on a house which isn't something I can do. Even my 69 BMW sits outside next to my E39 M5- both usually under cover. I have to buy new Michelin's for the M5 and 1 series on a regular basis because they start to crack from sitting outside. Asking around, most people said it's a big problem on Michelin's, but not most other brands. I guess that info was incorrect. |

That brings back memories .... Did a drive like that on Grand Central, driving most of the time looking through a passenger window because the '89 GT was sideways most of the way home. .... sorry, misspent youth ....
