Cold Weather Remote Start

Temps have been in the -5F range the past few days and we were unable to remote start our 2022 X7 yesterday, both thru the app and key fobs. The app was simply just giving an error but no details. I was then very surprised that the key fobs wouldn't work either. Additionally, all this was after driving it so the battery should have been charged. We tried again this morning and still no luck. I checked all the car settings, and everything looks normal.

We did experience this over a year ago when we visited ND and had the same low temps. So, is this an issue? I mean WTF do we have remote start when it doesn't work when it's -5 out???

Any idea what your battery charge state is?

This happened on my kids Honda Accord this morning too. The X7 hasn't been left out in this weather so I don't know how it would act. Luckily, it doesn't get this cold here that often (-12 this morning).

Yeah, we drove it this morning for 2x 45 min trips. Got home, I tried again and nothing. I called BMW, they told me to go into the settings and within 30 secs I got the low battery warning and everything shut down. I then started it with no issues. Guess time for an appt. Not sure if I have battery issues but I would think driving it would have recharged it enough.

Wow. That's not good. Keep us in the loop as to what their excuse is and how they fix it.

Negative temps in Chicagoland past couple days. Same experience here: Remote start/preconditioning via MyBMW app doesn’t work. Whether I try to start immediately or set a specified time. Keyfob remote start still works.

I can only imagine there’s some type of protection that BMW included in this feature to prevent the car from idling too much in such aggressive temperatures. It certainly isn’t good for the engine to idle from cold start in negative temps.

Efficient dynamics doesn't charge the battery unless the engine is coasting or overrunning (while braking). highway driving under light throttle doesnt charge the battery very much.

I've been topping off my battery since its been cold because i don't drive very much and ive gotten the battery discharge warning (i tend to use the remote view function during the week, so that wakes the car up for 20 minutes each time) its typically been sitting at about 50% charge when i hook up the charger. 40% seems to be the cutoff for some functions. i tend to top it off to 80-85%. that seems to keep things happy.

Ok yeah that's probably the issue. Just seems to happen more with these colder temps and that's when you want the remote start, haha!

You seem to be more knowledgeable and resourceful than most, so I just wanted to throw this out to the regular folk that I seem to remember all kinds of rules regarding jumping, charging and even battery tendering these mild hybrid systems. Like, if you don't do it right you can brick the whole vehicle as you can drain the big hybrid battery? Just think people should read up on it before they start trying to top off the battery...

the only real guidance is to use the under hood terminals and leave the hood open.
opening the hood disconnects the 48V MH battery, theres a TIS document that recommends this for maintenance charging.

using the under hood terminals runs the power through the BMS, so the car is controlling the battery charging.

Maybe that's what I am remembering. People attaching a battery tender and then closing the hood and bricking the vehicle to the point it needed to be towed.

Well, hilarious in one aspect, but quite dangerous in another if any driver gets caught in the cold with a dead Tesla and no heat and no way to get to safety. Hope everyone was fine.
